And I've had a damn good time too. And if I'm not in a lunatic asylum or jug, it's only because no one took the trouble to set the police on me.
I agree with the ICE moron that it is high time Americans learned that Homeland Security inevitably means creating a nationwide state of exception that none of us can escape without eliminating this entire agency and rendering its freikorps ... uh ... jobless.
A woman recording an ICE agent tells him "Shame on you."

The agent responds, "Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?"

"Learned what?" she asks

Then he knocks her phone out of her hand

this is your mission. roll up to this daycare in full tactical gear to harass some kids and teachers. when you get spooked by your own shadow like a panicked horse and start shooting your gun, our pedophile president will call the person you shot a terrorist. good luck soldier

I remember vividly the case made that Saddam Hussein was a "Bad Guy" to justify invasion of Iraq, and it is profoundly dispiriting to see no one even bothering beyond elections and oil, but Democratic leadership happy to parrot the underlying justification nevertheless.

I just showed my sons (10, 8) Avatar. Like 15 minutes in I asked them, "Who are the villains." The humans, they said. Good boys.
comparing star wars to avatar is like comparing like pink floyd to rage against the machine. people THINK they like pink floyd because its just always been there but pink floyds actually extremely boring and stupid. meanwhile rage against the machine fucking rules and says colonizers must die

One might read this headline and conclude the NYT is about to take on any number of military cultural pathologies -- rampant corruption in SOF, mil influencers, vet worship -- but actually it's about taking advantage of "the private sector's newly rekindled interest in the world of defense."

Back in the early 2000s I used to exhaust people by explaining my earnest belief that the organic and "unprocessed" foods movements were harbingers of resurgent fascism.
Feels like the US has spent the last 5+ years on the verge of some kind of secular moral revival that keeps getting channeled into weirdo lifestyle puritanism
Cafes across the U.S. are embracing the low- and no-caffeine lifestyle, with options that are a far cry from dusty tea bags and rewarmed decaf. nyti.ms/3XKlqoj

Salsa verde is Italian.
I’m gonna b honest, between jalapeño ranch and salsa verde, I feel like Texas has an answer to this national problem

Reading Abe Kōbō's Beyond the Curve and was ambivalent until "Record of a Transformation," which is very good. But that was followed by "Intruders," which seemed so nakedly reactionary I had to go double-check his politics. It's like if The Trial had been written by Ayn Rand.

When I moved to NorCal in the mid 90s San Francisco was like the source of everything cool. A starship of culture. Now I cross the Bay Bridge and see the AI billboards and it feels like infiltrating a fortress of evil. I'd make a Mordor comparison but the tech fascists have ruined that, too.

I think a lot about the way TV chefs became like The Troops, like we don't know anymore any other way to depict people working. Was thinking of this again after rewatching Topsy-Turvy and thinking about how Mike Leigh depicts people at work.
still kind of enjoying The Bear but I think we as a people deserve a prestige TV show about a Waffle House instead of this fine dining bullshit

Maybe I'm a simpleton, but all the arguments against rent control seem to depend on private landlords owning and controlling housing stock. Seems to me a big city mayor would hold a lot of price, policy and QoL levers if that housing was municipally held.

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

This is such a perfectly condensed little parable of the horrors of the bullshit machines: a completely ignorant and illiterate shibboleth against standard punctuation, born from nothing and threatening to take over in no time—meme as prion chewing holes in the brains of a generation
Working with a student on her story, I recommend using an em-dash. She says she can't, because professors will think she's using AI. She says that's a tell now. Is it? Is the hopeless race to outsmart AI causing us to lose bits of language and punctuation?

Hearing drums in the distance, I fish my waterlogged spyglass from the beach and peer at the horizon but can make out nothing through the murky mixture of sand and seawater. "The optics are bad," I declare immediately before being hit over the head with an enormous warclub.

If your political party is taking advice on how to communicate with The Common Man from Jake Tapper just throw in the towel.

The way political pressure works for everyone - left, right, center - is that support is conditional on performance. That's the whole point of politics.
So, let's game this out:

Say you're working for a left candidate in the 2028 dem primary & meeting with a community leader like Rev Noble to try & secure an endorsement

They tell you "the left always abstains, I can't get behind that"

What do you say?

Text generator aside, it's always unsettled me that there is writing about books that is aimed at people who don't read.
This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

My wife has been working in special education, specifically behavioral and emotional disturbance, for a decade and she says the consequences are severe.
I’m gonna do a limited defense of the guy everyone is dunking on (not gonna link to bring more pile on): the highest quality evidence we have shows remote schooling genuinely was bad in terms of learning and socialization, and the ripple effects likely are substantial

We have a lot of threads in this tangled mess but the administrative overrule of pedagogy was never about access, often created more roadblocks to actual access and is now a powerful tool for opportunity hoarding. Aimed first at women and minority faculty fyi. Per usual.
