To help Honest Bob Jenrick - whose video completely misrepresents the cab rank rule and the duties on barristers not to discriminate against politically unpopular clients - here’s something from last year. thesecretbarrister.com/2024/03/24/i...
Is it fair to criticise Keir Starmer for representing terrorists? Ten things you should know.
Following a series of attacks by the government and parts of the media against the leader of the opposition based on his career as a barrister, it appears necessary to sprinkle some facts into the …

New petition: "Immediately stop all arms exports to Israel & seek ceasefire in Gaza"

Deadline 5 June 2025, created by Patrick Madden

New petition: Immediately stop all arms exports to Israel & seek ceasefire in Gaza
We ask you to: •Immediately suspend all arms licences and exports to Israel. •Do everything in your power to seek an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Just 30 out of around 350 licenses to Israel have been suspended. We do not believe this is enough.

So now that the EU is on the same 10% tariff as the UK, could we please hear from all those who tried to portray the previous scenario as a 'Brexit benefit'...

Great but it needs to come with extra money so that you are not just displacing European applicants. The goal should be to minimise the fall in European + US research.

The thing about the Rule of Law is it applies to everyone or no-one

The second thing about the Rule of Law is if you don’t agree with a decision then you appeal it, you most certainly don’t attack the judge for applying it

The third thing about the Rule Of Law is without it, you have chaos

One odd thing about all this is that that those who shout about wanting "de-regulation" are also clapping and cheering at tariffs, the one of the oldest forms of, well, regulating trade.

Words are detached from concepts, no connections are being made. Muddled (lack of) thinking instead of policy.

Remember: the televised punishment & humiliation meted out to Zelensky just now could be done to any NATO ally facing similar aggression. The sense of sneering hostility & contempt by Trump & Vance isn’t specific to Ukraine.

This could be the UK. It won't be. But it could be.

(Remember that when someone else seizes the opportunity instead.)
There is a tremendous arbitrage opportunity for a country to give US scientists amnesty or fast-track citizenship to become an intellectual and research leader.
Just a reminder that Germany was the center of scientific progress until the Nazis suppressed, drove away, or killed all the non-Nazi scientists.

Ultimately it matters not if your constitution is written or unwritten or codified or uncodified…

…once those in power do not recognise political or legal rules higher than their own personal or partisan advantage it is constitutional ‘game over’.

Constitutions need constitutionalism, most of all.

If UK news shows are going to give Nigel Farage a platform to spout this absolute boll**** about Brexit & the vaccine rollout (unchallenged) I’ll happily come back every week to correct it

We cannot allow them to rewrite history.

📈Lots of charts doing rounds re market jitters in the UK.
Here's one I find quite helpful 👇
It's the cost of insuring UK debt against default.
Two things to note:
1. People ARE more concerned. The CDS spread HAS jumped up recently.
2. It's nothing like what happened in 2022.

It reported in Feb 2022.

We don't defeat populists by calling out their lies. We tried that. Facts are complicated, and the audience for populism wants simplicity. It won't work.

We defeat populists by enacting bold political ideas that improve lives for the disenfranchised, and make the world seem less grotesquely unfair.
