I wrote a bit for McSweeney's about Isaac Chotiner interviewing Santa Claus. Just a little something for the holiday season. Enjoy!

On a whim, I finally cleaned up a project I worked on about a year ago! It is now much less buggy (thanks Claude), so if you wanna know my argument for why John Oliver is a journalist and how PEEL from high school was useful, read it here!

If a man performs and no one is there to see it, did anyone hear how much of an ally he is?

very good article. talked about it on stream today.
"Common decency stigmatizes people that do not participate in it—removes them from voluntary association. We indeed have to live with one another, but terms and conditions apply."

I’m sure I’m not the first person to make this joke, but some journalists really do talk about Mamdani the way J. Jonah Jameson talks about Spider-Man

My issue with the angle of the story is that "Water identifies as H2O, but acknowledges it has fluoride" is also a factual angle, but is it newsworthy??
Patrick Healy, NYT assistant managing editor for Standards and Trust, wrote a thread on how the Zohran Mamdani/Columbia story came together:

One of the habits from Gawker that I will always carry with me is how to, as we called it, "eat shit" with honesty, even when it's painful or embarrassing. It helps readers trust you more when you explain how and why you fucked up. This is... not that

The most New York of stories happened this morning:

A baby was born on the subway.

Still working on getting more info, but. There's good news in the city.

(Broken by the New York Daily News, of course)
Baby born on W subway train traveling in Midtown Manhattan
EMS was called to the 34th St. station of the M, N, Q, R, and W trains just before 11:40 a.m., an FDNY spokesperson told the Daily News, and brought mother and baby to a nearby hospital.

I clicked play on what I thought was a whimsical Mike Schur sitcom. Tell me why they're playing Cat Stevens within the first 5 mins and it's suddenly raining in my apartment

absolutely, this was a hard lesson i learned at kotaku but it really molded me into a better writer
Some of my best writing ever was clickbait shit that a gaming website was having me churn out 12 times a day. It was meaningless to me but I still made it readable and at least remotely interesting. I feel like that's a core writing discipline, taking boring shit and make it _something._
