They USED to be the "American military" they now belong to one man, and he is intending to use them against us, if you protest, do not expect our military not to fire on you.

I hope for a future where I never again have to read a quote like "I always thought climate change was something that affected other people." Olivia, we are all "other people" to someone, and we all matter. That. Is. The. Whole. Point. Someday, it will come for us, and no one will be left to care.

Periodic reminder:

What you see on social media is an algorithm-curated echo chamber. Those who shout loudest typically get amplified the most, regardless of whether they’re right.

The real work takes place offline. If you’re getting stressed out by today, take a break, focus on what you can do.

My thoughts on not really winning a Hugo.

I wonder if we can work up an award medallion for Kuang, @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com, et al to use on their relevant works that says something like "Nominated then Censored for the 2023 Hugo Award" to help drive their sales back up? :)
Reputational damage has financial implications - it can affect book sales directly, when books are nominated or not, and indirectly, if the brand loses the trust of readers who habitually paid attention to it when selecting purchases.

It was also immoral.

If you don’t believe anything else i ever tell you, please believe this:

We are losing a LOT of spoons to the wrong battles. That’s what #obstructionism is. Throwing every possible barrier in our way so hard and so fast that we can’t keep up. Making us fight each other, instead of the problem.

That's about the best summary of so many things going wrong with modern life as I've heard. Thank you for that. (I'll probably be quoting you many times in the coming months.)

I mean, the President does HAVE an office (more than one, but that Oval one in particular). Usually things that are "from the office of the president" actually come from one of the offices outside the Oval though definitely in the same wing.
We frequently use the phrase, "from the office of the president," though

I wonder if it will stop here. I would definitely appreciate a public statement from the next Worldcon about this, if only to reassure us that future Hugo voters will be permitted to vote for things nominated.

And there it is -
Authors and works that were compliant with Chinese law and regulation.

Is that really a Hugo Award™®
Chengdu's second progress report contains this:

"Eligible members vote according to the "one person, one vote" rule to select Hugo Award works and individuals
that comply with local laws and regulations. The Chengdu organizing committee will review the nominated works and validate the votes."

It seems that Dave McCarty has personally broken the Hugo Awards.
Even @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com can’t get an answer to “WHICH RULE, DAVE?” Regarding the disaster that is the Hugo Awards.

The far right is trying to seize and control our borders and this should be taken seriously. This is their long term goal, as borders are ever more important to resource hoarders in a world being dramatically redrawn by climate change. I wrote about it here in 2022:
Reimagining Borders Could Help Contain Disinformation | Dame Magazine
During my time as a border reporter, I was often struck by how those who have been deported use the phrase “over there” to refer to the United States. Many people who have been deported tend to st...
