An important partisan point -- lots of our sh*tt**st public figures used to be Democrats, but became Racist Rethugs when the Dem voters weren't sh*tty enough for them (Dem voters, NOT Dem leaders, who were and are remarkably sh*tty). So, yeah we live in a democracy. With party competition. Sort of.

Your dad's cousin is your aunt. I am from a family of plain boring white people and my kids call my wife's cousins who live around here and they see all the time "aunt/uncle." This is not even some "see, in other cultures," thing this is just a total normal thing they are presenting as scandalous

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

Everyone should see Jamelle Bouie's spiked posts on the Nazi-sourced NYTimes nothingburger story aimed at smearing Mamdani, and then raise hell about the Gray Lady's evil social media policies.

amen to this sentiment on (part of!) the role of US higher education -- I would add, at all levels, not jus R1s.
I'm sure I'll take shit for saying this, but this passage from Glenn Loury's Chronicle interview perfectly captures for me the civilizational necessity of a relatively autonomous academic sphere. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

Hey Curtis -- ever hear of an 'Executive Officer" of a US Naval vessel? And, um, what exactly is his job?
Always funny to me that Yarvin is held up as the great intellect of the New Right and then when he argues for stuff it's this - here's some etymology for a synonym of a word you're using, so we gotta have a tyrant -- checkmate libs. Behold the philosopher.

My personal "5 years since the start of Covid" moment is remembering that in 2020, the US discovered it had allowed almost all its mask and PPE manufacturing to transfer to China for cost savings.

In 2025, PPE is still almost all made offshore, and we just encouraged China to end shipments to us.

Stephen Miller is out in front and widening the gap in the WorstPersonWorkingForStinky-BooBoo race
They had lawyers, trials, most were given pretrial release, allowed to testify in their own defense, got discovery, could call witnesses, could cross-examine witnesses, could present mitigation at sentencing, and had a right to appeal.

Remember how during Stinky-BooBoo's first term the pandemic released an unexpected hell of "supply chain disruption?" Get ready for a repeat.
It should be noted that markets have underreacted to the tariffs. A 30–50% sales tax (aka tariffs),
will wipe out entire industries.

The -7% drop this week doesn’t reflect the full damage. It’s an optimistic move assuming the tariffs won’t stick. The impact, if enforced, would be far more severe.
