Not actually a penguin. Instead, a very human librarian. Mostly cat pictures and book recommendations here.

I cannot for the life of me decide whether I like this pain scale or the one I brought over from Twitter better. Maybe this one, if only because it doesn't skip 1?
A friend shared this on Facebook earlier, after which, I shared it in our Disability Justice (Un)Learning Signal group, & after a fellow brown spoonie expressed appreciation for it, I got to thinking that my Bluesky followers may benefit. Here is the original post! 👀

I still want all audiobooks to be narrated by real, live people because AI can never match voice actors, but Speechify is proving to be a decent accessibility tool for helping me read all the @seananmcguire.bsky.social October Daye shorts that aren’t available in audio.

If Katrina let me, I would catify the house. Hire a professional, go all out. A haven for our cats + the best foster room ever.
Since none of us is actually going to win the Powerball, what’s the most ridiculous thing you’d do with the money if you won? Forget paying off student loans or buying a house, what’s your ridiculous purchase?

”The Four Sisters Overlooking the Sea”by @naomikritzer.bsky.social (Asimov’s 9-10/24) just won a Hugo Award! It’s the only non-audio short fiction I managed to read this year (post-concussion still sucks) and it was so worth it. Find yourselves a copy, folks!

The cats love the bay windows in our temporary rental. How do I break it to them that our new house doesn’t have any?

Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott is a novel about generational trauma and the power and the necessity of stories. It tugged at my heartstrings in all the right places, but cat lovers beware of a few catskin references. Magical realism. Highly recommend. Audio/print. 🌈📚 ✡️📚

Rainbow capitalism aside, queer books are actively under attack, and now is a great time to show publishers there's still a thriving market for books with LGBTIA+ characters and by LGBTIA+ authors. If you've been hoping for an excuse to buy queer books on your wish list, consider this your free pass

I loved Bluesky until the concussion made looking at a screen - especially when scrolling- too painful to do for a reasonable amount of time! I miss the community I’d started to build here. @support.bsky.team please make it accessible!
Bluesky is “screen reader accessible” the way a staircase with curb cuts on each step is a “wheelchair ramp.”
No keyboard nav. No useful landmarks. No focus memory. I lose my place every time I interact with a post.
Compliance ≠ usability.

So called “autistic rigidity” contributes to some of my greatest strengths: a commitment to integrity, honesty & fairness, internal consistency in my thinking, & focused dedication to my work. It comes with tradeoffs, like everything else in the world. #Autistic

The autistic urge to always give the other person the benefit of the doubt or assume they worded something awkwardly because you were always the one messing up or wording something wrong and not being given the benefit of the doubt but now you struggle to actually spot red flags because of it

I met the neighborhood void yesterday! Judging from the sleekness of this feline, I'm fairly certain they have a home. Our neighborhood is not known for its community cats. (As much as I loved admiring them, can the family of this cat please keep them inside before the wildlife does them harm?)

This one was very needy today! In a first, she was also very kneady on my glutes! Dali, how can I train you to do that on a regular basis?

Golemcrafters by Emi Watanabe Cohen tackles contemporary antisemitism by linking it to Jewish history and peoplehood. It doesn't shy away from harsh truths but also has really endearing and outright funny moments. Incredibly well researched. I loved it. MG fantasy. Jews of color rep. Audio/print. ✡️📚

My #transrightsreadathon turned into a Sir Callie by Esme Symes-Smith readathon. If you have a kid in your life, I recommend this series. It tackles hard issues - self-confidence, gender identity, child abuse - in an affirming way while also just being an engrossing story. MG fantasy. Audio/print 🌈📚

Tonight I hold my cats close. At the next opportunity, I will recite the Mourner’s Kaddish for all of them. I don’t think my clergy will mind. They’re cool like that.
I don't ask for anything, but Happy Cat Sanctuary in Medford, NY, burned down, killing over 100 cats. The owner died trying to reach them & get them out. Can everyone say prayers for their little souls. 7 of my feral babies were rescued & sent to live there many years ago.

Seriously, cats. I know you’re the best medicine but sometimes I do need to supplement you with OT exercises, and that involves you not sitting on them.

I am also participating! This is the time to seek out these stories rather than stumble upon them by accident and be pleasantly surprised.
This week, I'm participating in #transrightsreadathon an annual call to action to readers and book lovers in support of #TransDayOfVisibility. I'll post any recommendations I find below. I encourage you to support trans authors and donate to charities. More details at transrightsreadathon.carrd.co
