This is the direct consequence of no senior officials, let alone GWB, paying any legal, personal, or professional price at all for torture & Abu Ghraib two decades ago. Our polity completely fails at elite accountability, and so here we are, on the doorstep of full-on fascism.

Reading all of the anti-trans EOs this week, I am reminded of how much harder it is to litigate against incompetent opposing counsel (as opposed to competent lawyers). You have to start by essentially constructing their argument for them in order to know what to counter. I suspect that is the point.

Quietly reflecting: the U.S. v. Skrmetti oral arguments happening rn are a real time example of qualified, competent people looking the worst odds dead in the eyes & continue fighting for the most vulnerable people bc any lesser choice is a no. To look resignation in the eye & say, not today.
