It takes 240 trees to absorb the CO₂ produced from one car in a single year. Building dense, walkable cities where more people can live a car-free lifestyle saves trees in the exurbs and makes a bigger difference than the most heavily forested backyard.
Another neighbor of mine says she has 28 trees on her historic Queen Anne property and we should "slow down" with all the density talk.

RIP Dr. Shoup. You made so many people (including me) think so radically differently about something we thought was so mundane. And yet somehow remained so wonderfully down-to-earth and accessible!
wake up babe, new free-market price for surface parking in Cambridge, MA just dropped!

Harvard Square #CambMa, one spot (no, not the whole lot) just closed at $115,000.

Donald Shoup passed. He was my doctoral advisor, and just one of the best people you could know (and his wife Pat is a delight). Don was unique in academia and planning: he was a late bloomer (another inspiration to me) and he changed the world. I'll share two things. parkingreform.org/donald-shoup/

Instead of gloating because voters who stayed home are now unhappy, maybe ask why Harris failed to convincingly differentiate herself to those voters on this issue.

@scottsthoughts I kinda feel like "make it convenient to get to MB (ideally without a car)" should be an urban planning goal for Somerville, given how much cheaper it is than anywhere else.

This is in the area where the @cambridgemass.bsky.social just announced that meter rates for street parking would rise to $2 per hour.

At that rate, if the spot (again, worth $917.72 per month) was paid for *every single hour* in the month when meters are on, it would only generate $625-ish.

Post-facto musings: inclusionary zoning is effectively a tax on developers and new purchasers. This is convenient if you don't want to tax existing property holders.

But there's vastly more existing property than new, so maximizing affordable housing would benefit from taxing all the property.

This is the bike parking future I want for Boston
Did you notice the bright sign, powered by a solar panel, on the left side of my video?

It's a handy real-time counter of the number of spots available at 3 nearby central Utrecht bike parking garages.

This bike parking is fully weather protected, securely staffed 24/7, free for the first 24 hrs.
