Think much of the over-parenting we despise stems from the early on fear of the driver.
If parents weren't terrified of our streets kids would have so much more freedom and independence which might get them comfortable with their children's ability to navigate the world without them.

What makes it so striking is that these are people with whom you have an obvious, built-in social tie. You see each other regularly. These aren’t total strangers, and it’s still too much to ask to even consider the possibility they’re actual people.

Watching antisocial driver behavior in the school drop-off line makes it really clear that the pandemic destroyed whatever few shreds remained of the social compact, just pathological selfishness on display every day

What I think about every time I hear someone whining about the new daylighting law.
Bike safety advocates are calling for accountability after a driver struck a child in a crosswalk outside a Berkeley middle school. But the primary issue wasn't the driver behind the wheel, they say, but another driver who had parked in a nearby red zone.
After boy hit in crosswalk, school red curbs top of mind
The crash happened Monday at about 3 p.m., at Hopkins Street and Colusa Avenue, as King middle school was letting out.

As our kids go #BackToSchool, never forget that we ARE the traffic that we’re afraid of. If more kids walked, biked or rode transit to school, it would erase a massive number of car trips each day, and our kids would be safer, healthier and better at school. HT Ian Lockwood.

Spread the word.

One of the most disappointing things about being an advocate for non-car transportation is that you end up discovering how many left-wing spaces are full of people who hold casual beliefs that non-drivers' lives don't matter.
Anyways, deeply disappointing that rebutting "bikes run stop signs so it's their fault if I hit them!" has become a weekly thing On Here.

It wasn't that having my own kids radicalized me. It was spending time with kids that did.

Those blissful little idiots can not comprehend the dangers that adults force on them. It is unfair and needs stop.

"We ask kids to be safe so adults can be dangerous" @tomflood.bsky.social
Why are cars going 30mph where kids are?

15mph is fast enough for cars change my mind.
NO ONE can react in less than a second to a child running in front of a car going 30 mph. It’s physics.

Shocker. They want to privatize everything. Schools. NASA. Police. Health care. Social security. The VA. Everything.
The downsizing of the National Weather Service and the NOAA appears to be part of an effort to privatize the work of such agencies.

In several instances, the companies poised to step into the void have deep ties to people tapped by Trump to run weather-related agencies. apnews.com/article/trum...

This is exactly what will happen. His base has already been negatively polarized against the basic concept of healthcare. This bill is a gigantic boon to the coffee enema and "alternative" cancer treatment scam industry.
It just occurred to me that Trump's denial of Medicaid for many of his cult followers will leave them without legitimate medical coverage & they will resort to "wellness" scammers- those who wouldn't qualify for Medicaid payments. The snake oil salesmen figure to benefit more than anyone here.

A Veteran on dialysis told Sen. Mark Kelly: “SNAP and food banks are the only way I eat.”

Trump and the GOP call it a “Big Beautiful Bill.” No—It’s a brutal assault on Veterans just trying to survive.

This is oligarchy. This is obscene.

While 60% live paycheck to paycheck & kids go hungry, Jeff Bezos, worth $230 billion, goes to Venice on his $500 million yacht for a $20 million wedding & spends $5 million on a ring while his real tax rate is just 1.1%.

End this oligarchy.

We are facing a serious threat to democracy, law, and liberty. The abuse of prosecutorial power to intimidate, investigate, and detain political opponents is upon us. It is a constitutional crisis. I will keep speaking out until public outrage overflows. I just hope it’s not too little, too late.
