A big part of what makes Christopher Nolan movies great are the sweeping montages of gorgeous visuals, and a big part of what makes his movies suck is Hans Zimmer‘s insipid score for these montages.

On the opposite end of the quality spectrum here: Noah and the Whale.
First album is twee dreck but then the 2 lead singers broke up. The follow-up is a crushing breakup album called First Day of Spring. FFO: Villagers, Bon Iver

Good evening Bluesky. What do you think is the sharpest rise in quality between a first album and a second album?

My choice is from "Frank" to "Back In Black" by Amy Winehouse.

One of my very young students asked me if I’m a girl or a boy. Wow! I was planning on going to a workshop on queer artistic presentation this weekend.

Much like Sauron held the ring of power, Trump holds the highest office in the land, but do his words hold a ring of truth? Only through journalism can we wield the ring of truth to power and win back our democracy.

I’ve been playing 3-part fugues lately on piano. Tricky with only 2 hands. It gets to the point where your hands start expecting you won’t have enough fingers. So they start to accommodate on their own? Odd feeling.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

I really don’t get the hype for A Love Supreme or Black Saint & the Sinner Lady. They’re both concept albums - unusual in jazz. But you could pick a random album from Coltrane or Mingus and it’s gonna blow those suites out the water.
