Revolution in the Head was the first good music book I read too! Soon discovered Allan W Pollack’s Beatles analyses which really sent me over the edge.

I saw some of the jokes and it didn’t have much juice only there was an army (of far right bots?) commenting under every post. So of course it spread. It looks like it’s had an adverse affect on the constitution of our restauranteer.

It’s by another blind harper called Ruadhrí Dall Ó Ceathain from way before Ó Carolan.

This is my recommendation. It was a lost recording that only came out recently of Dolphy and Coltrane and it’s just unreal. youtu.be/vtZyDuU06eE?...

So people with busy lives gravitate toward the landmark albums. its easier than ever to discover the canon. But you can just stream a different Coltrane album every week on the way to work and feel a bit like living in Harlem in 1958!

It’s easy to fall into the trap of looking for the “best thing“ as an entry point into art. I used to try and read all the top 100 books and it just put me off. The best book is some random trash your cousin threw out.

Even the word Supreme feels unjazzy to me. It’s so hierarchical. You don’t want to be judging jazz when you’re listening to it. Coltranes whole discography is there and then there’s the Supreme one. I’ll take the bulk of paydirt over a handful of gold flakes.

I Think there’s just a kind of solemnity that puts me off A Love Supreme. It’s all getting a bit pompous. Whereas on Blue Train it’s like nobody gives a fuck. And on Giant Steps it’s all about getting the mistakes down on wax.
