I'm honestly just riffing at reiterating a tiny portion of what Talia Bhatt argues much more persuasively and compellingly in the article, which I highly encourage you to check out. It's a great read.

Heterosexual men rightly understand that there are social, legal, and financial carrots and sticks pushing women into relationships with them in which there is a power differential, and women gaining even 1% more agency to opt out of heterosexual norms is viewed as an assault, a kind of oppression.

Men choose patriarchy (in varying degrees, from abusers to completely socially acceptable 'feminist' identifying men) because it materially benefits them. A world in which women are free is a world in which men have less control over women and they don't want that.

It would be so great if men just didn't understand that patriarchy hurts them too because no one told them, or if feminists arguing our points differently would suddenly get through to them, or if class solidarity just made gendered oppression go away. We need to reckon with the reality, though.

The balance of gendered power within western heterosexual society in the last 30 years shifted approximately 2 centimeters towards women's autonomy, self-respect, and labour. Women are 1% less oppressed. The result was that men lost their fucking minds.

Much ink has been spilled to the effect of "trans girl spinny skirt cringe" but I don't think people realize how demandingly rigid the rituals of forced masculinity are. I was screamed at for wearing the "wrong colored" shoes. Let trans women be girls, most were not allowed to be.
One of the great things about being a trans woman is giving yourself permission to finally like cute things that weren't "socially acceptable" to enjoy before.

[Not that this is the way things SHOULD be. Just finding small joy where I can.]

Counterpoint: Bad things shouldn't happen to anyone, and disarming bad people (of literal weapons, money, etc.) shouldn't be thought of as a "bad thing"

But once we accept that bad things should happen to bad people, everything turns into a hunt for the "bad people" instead of actual solutions.
Hot take but bad things should happen to bad people

I’ve gotten pretty good at doing my nails, if I can ever figure out how to do eyeliner consistently, I’ll be unstoppable.

This is humiliatingly weak and pathetic.

The dominant national ethos has become one of weak insecurity. It’s like if Frank Burns was a white nationalist.
Department of Interior says if you put a sticker over Trump's face on your national park entrance pass, the pass will be invalidated.
Meanwhile Trump's decision to put his face on the passes is being challenged in court
DOI cracks down on stickers covering Trump's face on national park passes
Park passes with protest stickers are facing new scrutiny.

Once you finally begin to recognize us first and foremost as women, this is really all you need to understand about us.
This understanding of why, precisely, the global reactionary wave is so fixated on trans people and trans womanhood particularly, is incredibly lacking amongst even many feminist commentators. Trans women are being made the face of a worldwide right-wing "common enemy" to retrench Nationalism.

Having spent a not-insignificant chunk of my life in post-dictatorship countries, the naiveté of American exceptionalism in thinking it can't happen here is just staggering. Like, we've been setting the stage for it to happen for literal decades.
