Found my 5 year old squeezing out a tube of Aquaphor into a bowl of water because he was "doing an experiment". We ended up doing solubility tests in water, hand sanitizer, and oil. Then we saw how soap dispersed it in water. He really enjoyed it and learned all about polarity and micelles 🧪👩‍🔬🍎🥽⚛️🧬

As someone who doesn't do research on fire, but has to talk about--more and more--in courses on environmental science and environmental change, the insight available from people in these starter packs is invaluable: bsky.app/starter-pack... and bsky.app/starter-pack...

Last morning of #SICB2025 and we’re starting off bright and early with @kevindkohl.bsky.social

Kevin studies the bacteria that live on and within animals.

He’s giving us a history of the study of the holobiont- the collective of organisms that live together as a unit (e.g. you & all your bacteria)

This should be obvious, but judging by the claims of education traditionalists, it may bear repeating: Successful contestants on Jeopardy! may also happen to be highly smart, but we can't assume that's true just because they've managed to memorize a lot of information.

The tendency to conflate […]

That whole “Get your final projects in now, cause I’m going to grade them over break” line is really biting me in the ass now isn’t it?

Seriously. I sue drug companies, you don't have to tell me they suck, nor explain to me the risks of pharmaceuticals.

But vaccines are different, they're like stealing fire from the Gods and burning plagues with it. Their benefit/risk ratio is downright magical.

Outraged by the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, a wilderness survival trainer spent years undercover climbing the ranks of right-wing militias.

He didn’t tell police or the FBI. He didn’t tell family or friends. The one person he told was ProPublica reporter @josh-kaplan.bsky.social.

My kid is eating a tub of feta cheese with a spoon for lunch.

I think we all may be ready for a school routine to start back up again.

The combined net worth of America's twelve wealthiest people passed $2 trillion last year.

12 people. $2 trillion.

Meanwhile, U.S. homelessness increased 18% in 2024.

Our problem isn’t an issue of resources.

Our problem is ever-expanding wealth inequality.

Yep. This is one of the most radicalizing pieces I ever wrote, about my own high school.

Silver-bullet, top-down Bold New Ideas are never going to work. Effective approaches are slow, make significant investments and ask teachers what they need.

I’m writing a paper and I’m curious about something:

How many biology teachers out there teach any form of bioinformatics?

What tools do you use?
Which unit?

Also curious if you just don’t teach it at all.

(I miss polls)
