Just landed in Portland. Someone is scrolling ticktock videos without headphones on this light rail train but that falls a little short of terrorism.
Trump: Portland is burning to the ground—insurrectionists all over the place. The politicians are afraid for their lives. That’s the only reason they say there’s nothing happening.

He’s never accompanied a child to a doctor’s appointment. That’s for sure.
Trump: "I think it has -- I think it's very bad. They're pumping, it looks like they're pumping into a horse. You have a little child, a little fragile child, and you get a vat of 80 different vaccines, I guess. 80 different blends. And they pump it in. So ideally, a woman won't take Tylenol."

“Mr. Van Hollen saw a different lesson [from his role in the Abrego Garcia case]. ‘This finger in the wind stuff has got to end. We also need to stop deluding ourselves that the problem is all about messaging, or about volume, or style. We don’t just need to fight. We need to fight for something.’”

Seems like we could address our homelessness crisis and improve conditions for downtown businesses by building a lot of housing on the downtown mall.

I watched this whole discussion last night and it made me grateful for Cville’s council members. I’m also grateful for our at-large council system.
Very illuminating clip here: Los Angeles City Councilmember Imelda Padilla criticizes SB 79 because it limits local elected officials’ power to block new housing, then @jonlovett.bsky.social reminds her that we have a massive housing shortage that is strangling our state’s growth.

The guy who oversaw the legal justification for W’s torture program is now high up at USDOT and is going on podcasts saying they are eliminating “unnecessary distractions” like “racial equity and environmental justice.” (His exact words). I knew Trump 2.0 would be bad but it’s really bad.

New mantra unlocked. Thanks Obama. “I don’t want to know your ideology, because you can’t build anything. It does not matter.”
“‘I don’t care how much you love working people. They can’t afford a house because all the rules in your state make it prohibitive to build. And zoning prevents multifamily because of NIMBY,’ [Obama] said…‘I don’t want to know your ideology, because you can’t build anything. It does not matter.’”

Thoughtful people can disagree about whether IZ is “good” but it’s important to be clear-eyed about the fact that it is effectively a tax on housing.
Inclusionary zoning is a targeted tax on the construction of new housing — the absolute worst way you could think of to raise money for investments in social housing projects.

The 14th Street Busway has been a smashing success: faster commutes, fewer crashes, calmer streets.

So why is Eric Adams blocking a similar plan for 34th Street?

I really appreciate the neighborhood fireworks launchers for spacing out the loud booms randomly so that each explosion triggered a fresh adrenaline rush that made it impossible to sleep until sometime after 1am last night.

Is our movement for safe streets served by sympathetic media that gets basic facts wrong? I’m not so sure.
Guerrilla crosswalks drive city officials crazy, but they're a remarkably effective street safety tactic.

Sympathetic media coverage is all but guaranteed -- esp when local leaders overreact.

I know this isn’t the worst thing about this but why is “law enforcement” dressed like this? Are they going to invade a desert fortress after this and need blend in?

Just asked a California transit manager if the state's Zero Emission Bus mandate is causing them to run less service than they otherwise would.

He said: "Yes, definitely."

A diesel bus only has to get 4 ppl out of cars to be better for the planet than an electric bus.

Hmm.

VANCE: We'll have visitors from close to 100 countries. We want them to come, we want them to celebrate, we want them to watch the games. But when the time is up, they'll have to go home, otherwise they'll have to talk to Secretary Noem
