My new piece is about a community in the Blue Ridge who doesnt know a Helene strength storm is coming because the weather alerts have been privatized, & after losing their home, take refuge in the large camps of unhoused people living in the former National Park.

On November 10, 1898, a shocking coup was executed in Wilmington, North Carolina, as white mobs led by former Confederate Col. Alfred Moore Waddell overthrew the city’s elected biracial government and massacred 60 or more Black people.

Pretty sure we saw a black bear den hiking around the hillsides today. Never seen one of those before. It was like a huge hole in the ground underneath an old fallen tree.

Everything is tucked away for tonight’s first real freeze. Fall garden is really doing well this year, got some of those multiplier onions & overwinter lettuce seed in. Harvest our first daikons today too.

Really so happy to have found this tree still standing. The area was logged was about 50/100 feet away but the steep hills made it hard to get machines in there I guess. The beech disease will likely take this grove out in the years to come, but I’m glad I got to see it in peaks leaf this year.

It really is remarkable to witness the shift that has taken place in Virginia since this election. I remember voting for Gore in my elementary school election and Ill never forget that I was 1 of 9 out of the whole school who voted for him lol.

Death to Spotify ☠️
Spotify is crashing HARD because of the boycott. Their stock dropped 11% in value over the last month. Let’s keep this going!
Tell everyone you know to boycott Spotify. There are plenty of alternatives that don’t run ICE advertisements and screw over artists.
We made it easy at boycottspotify.com.

Peak leaf is happening this weekend in the Tidewater region of VA. I’m excited to get out into some of these old growth Beech groves in Westmoreland co tomorrow.

There's almost no posting on here about the new SSEP pipeline that will run through Virginia and damage local waterways. November 10th is the deadline to tell VA DEQ NO SSEP.

All very well and nice, but this is meaningless unless combined with a serious attempt to address the cause of the rising seas. It’s just addressing the symptom not the illness.
A decade after Dutch engineers helped Hampton Roads rethink how it handles rising seas, local and international experts gathered this week in Norfolk to mark the 10th anniversary of the Dutch Dialogues and plan for the future.
The ‘Dutch Dialogues’ changed Hampton Roads’ relationship with water. Ten years later, what’s next?

Starting to get these Tokyo Market turnips from SESX. We can’t grow them in the spring bc the worms are so bad, but they do great in the fall. Purple tops are on the way.

He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

Good on Tom Hanks for normalizing masking, its a really bare minimum community minded practice that you can do while our government goes full fascist/eugenics.

Just got off the phone with head of security for property where this tree lives & we’re going to see if it survived the logging this Saturday. I also learned that all these Beech trees in this part of Westmoreland co have been affected by the Beech disease, might be the last year to see it living.
One thing thats been bumming me out is the other week I went to find this old graffiti tree my friend Roger took me to years ago. Roger passed & when we drove to this area it looks like it has all been logged for the timber $. lm dying to get into the woods when the leaves fall to see it was spared.
