I was glad to find it because this whole section of woods has been logged recently. Also adding to heaviness of this trip was the fact that the whole area is showing signs of the Beech disease, making this potentially one of the last years well experience this beautiful peak leaf beech grove.

It’s hard to know exactly how old this tree is but it is fair to say that it likely witnessed this landscape before the civil war when the region was among the oldest and fiercest of the American Slavocracy, on through to the modern era, when woodland trails were abandoned for car infrastructure.

My friend Roger who passed away in 2019 took me to see this tree almost a decade ago. Roger was a true keeper of local history and folklore in his section of the Northern Neck and told me he understood this marking to be the last survivor of five beech trees used as trail markers through the woods.

Everything is tucked away for tonight’s first real freeze. Fall garden is really doing well this year, got some of those multiplier onions & overwinter lettuce seed in. Harvest our first daikons today too.

Really so happy to have found this tree still standing. The area was logged was about 50/100 feet away but the steep hills made it hard to get machines in there I guess. The beech disease will likely take this grove out in the years to come, but I’m glad I got to see it in peaks leaf this year.

Peak leaf is happening this weekend in the Tidewater region of VA. I’m excited to get out into some of these old growth Beech groves in Westmoreland co tomorrow.

Starting to get these Tokyo Market turnips from SESX. We can’t grow them in the spring bc the worms are so bad, but they do great in the fall. Purple tops are on the way.

Heading over to Spotslyvania/Orange today to hopefully catch the last of the fall colors around there and make some recordings on the battlefield for my witness tree project.

Getting creative with using parts of dead trees for my witness tree project. This is a piece of a tree with a lead bullet stuck in it from the Spotsylvania battlefield.

Nice day snooping around King George today. Found the historic chestnut stumps thanks to the park staff. Hit some historic graveyards too. Peak leaf almost in Fburg but Northern Neck is still pretty green. I used to work out here at some historic gardens, nice to revisit some of those backroads. 🍁

First gourd of the year has been cut. Anyone have thoughts on curing on/off the vine? I’m determined to get some good ones this year and there are a ton still drying on the trellis.
