So ends #2025svp . What an amazing experience! So many wonderful people doing incredible work. Plenty of inspiration for my own science & outreach projects. Plus it's always nice to spend quality time in my home city.
Until next time, whenever that may be ❤️🐋🦕🦣❤️

I’m at the annual paleontology conference. Here’s how people today have described their work:

“I basically study swamp monsters”
“I’m a dinosaur orthodontist”
“Dead bird bird watcher”

One day to go to #2025svp ! Plenty of presentations to check out, but I'm also on a mission to meet new friends & colleagues, foster research & outreach collaboration, set up field work & lay the foundations for postgrad endeavours. Say hi if you spot me! ❤️🦖🦕🦣 @societyofvertpaleo.bsky.social

The inspiration for the black fur of the giant fossa featured in #PrehistoricPlanet has me wondering how many other animals in the show have been influenced by indigenous wisdom & cryptid sightings. Article by @tetzoo.bsky.social share.google/kJ5HeqfsCyed...

My jaw genuinely dropped when I saw this image. It is literally, 100% my mental image of what Homotherium looked like. Absolutely perfect. 10/10. No notes.

Since it's now confirmed the Dwarf elephants are Stegodons, I've added Megalochelys & Leptoptilos r. to the wildcard category
I have an itchy feeling the Prehistoric Planet Ice Age trailer will drop any moment, so here's my largely vibes-based predicitons / wishlist.

Nanotyrannus is real.

For years I’ve considered many mid-sized gracile tyrannosaurs to be juvenile T. rex.

But I was wrong. This stunning new skeleton of a mature long-armed small tyrannosaur is clearly a different species.

Isn’t science fun?!

Analysis of Montana fossils shows the battling predator was a fully grown Nanotyrannus, not a young T rex

Except Maize (the plant we get corn from which dominates American farming) uses C4 photosynthesis, which means it stores carbon in its cells & releases it gradually for photosynthesis. You can flood it with CO2, but it won't grow any quicker.
These f'ing idiots
"[State] Senate File 92 would declare that 'Carbon dioxide is a foundational nutrient necessary for all life on earth,' according to the bill. 'Plants need carbon dioxide along with sunlight, water and nutrients to prosper. The more carbon dioxide available for this, the better life can flourish.'"

Today's museum theme is "finding things I didn't know we had", including a monkey holding an orange & a 70m long tapeworm bottle in formalin over 100 years ago. I'll spare you an image of the actual specimen, because it's grim
