placeholders should be so bad you can't miss them or so adequate it wouldn't matter if they shipped. terrible or legally unusable assets which blend in are liability and sign of negligence

you should make placeholder graphics look incredibly shitty!! making a game is a long and complicated process and if you use ai to make placeholders that look finished at a glance you'll probably forget some of it, and then people will scour your whole game and you'll look like a fraud.

I also think there's similar trend between e.g. HD metroidvanias compared to less "respectable" looking ones. There's always a narrative of the respectable one being the better one, but it's important to look at the history of that "respectable" aesthetic an what that excludes

So, “Order of the Sinking Star” by Thekla was just announced, which takes several small free games (two of which are mine) and gives them a major graphical upgrade and mashes up their rulesets. I haven’t been very involved but it’s a great concept and looks cool.
