I cannot express how incredibly vapid it is for @chatterton.bsky.social to be essentially resorting to civility discourse when the thing we are talking about is an armed agent of the state shooting a woman to death in broad daylight, confident that his thug regime will protect him from justice.

This right here, this exact sentence, is THE problem in American political journalism.

The IRA *was* cheap energy and good jobs! That was the whole bill! Democrats did precisely what political pundits are telling them to do and the pundits just ignore it.

Can't overstate how fucked up it is that unraveling what is arguably the greatest achievement in the history of humanity is now a motivating issue of one of the two dominant parties in the U.S.

There’s probably a lesson to be learned that if you and everyone in your movement is assiduously nice to journalists on Twitter, you can get them to agree with you about anything, but I doubt people here are ready for that conversation.

I remember in 2017 when @nytimes.com published an article on undocumented students at UC Merced, and not only posted their full names but included their dorm names and room numbers (which was not relevant).

I guess anonymity at the Times is only for white supremacists.

It rules how we're getting the Butlerian Jihad because of people freaking out over copyright rather than you know, the use of GenAI as a disinformation machine or to create extremely illegal pornography
We’ve seen a wide range of accusations regarding the use of AI-generated content in The Alters, and we feel it’s important to clarify our approach and give you more context.

The first time New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani saw ice, the ice had been brought into the city by an old man in khakis accompanied by a penguin. The old man in khakis had trained the penguin to dance, or so he said; mostly, the penguin simply stood nearby, molting sadly in the summer heat.
so I have a lot of complicated thoughts about the specific issue at hand, but I have to point out that’s not what “magical realism” is

if, ten years ago, your entire understanding of politics was that the right wing wanted to destroy everything because they were evil, you had a more accurate and more predictive analysis than functionally the entire American media and political apparatus

not sure what precisely was said but similarly i’ve felt for awhile that we also need more genuinely repulsive, top to bottom evil antagonists. i’m kinda tired of murky complicated bad guys who sometimes make trenchant political or social commentary
In light of Breaking Bad guy wanting a return to genuinely admirable protagonists, what is your favorite example of one? I’d argue Picard from TNG is a really strong example in that he isn’t infallible but is unrelentingly concerned with the moral costs of decisions and the power placed in his hands

we already live in a patrician system of governance where there is effectively zero incentive to reform how governance functions from the local to state level and it is because we have made the American home mortgage into the principal financial vehicle used to transfer wealth between generations.
At the Eaton Fire (Altadena) fire community meeting, Kathryn Barger (county board of supervisors) says her goals for rebuilding (2000 structures destroyed!) are: no new density, and no changes in property tax assessments (Prop 13 says valuations only increase if a property is sold or redeveloped).

The key takeaway is that the world’s richest man got what he wanted; stripped our cancer funding for kids, killed reforms to bring down drugs prices and caps on investment in China. Trump on the other hand demanded a debt ceiling raise and got nothing.

one of my central beliefs, really genuinely and sincerely is that cars are fundamentally evil and indoctrinate people into extremely reactionary ideology.
I am not joking.

I will be pissed at so many people for the rest of my fucking life about the way the Afghan withdrawl was covered. Congratulations, the next dozen presidents were watching and you have made the incentives very clear: we will never end a war again
There's a hypothesis that the backlash to the Afghanistan withdrawal led to the Biden admin becoming deathly afraid of alterations to the status quo even when the new status quo was fundamentally untenable for ideological or moral reasons
i recognize there were some major wins--e.g. AUKUS--but on ukraine and gaza specifically, whatever the hell he was doing wasn't working
