BREAKING: Donald Trump, on his Truth Social account, claims that the US has captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as part of an operation that involved "large scale strikes" on Caracas

Funniest outcome here would be Maduro being acquitted by a US court because the Trump administration didn't think through the case and puts one of their idiot TV pundit prosecutors on it... and then countersuing.

Because international media largely seems to struggle to choose the correct wording to describe what’s happening: the US, under the self describes „peace president“, attacked another country and kidnapped its president. That is factual, no matter how bad or illegitimate Maduro‘s rule is (very bad).

Shameful and incredibly ironic given the topic of cowardly elites.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Vital piece of investigative reporting from Sky. They've uncovered the X algorithm which feeds users extremist right wing material from the moment they join the site. It is a far-right radicalisation engine, by design.

The "hard-men" of Gondor were getting their shit kicked in until they were rescued by foreigners and a girl.

The Shire was doing fine until they let a fascist demagogue ("Sharkey" aka Saruman) take over, close the gates, impose a bunch of thug-enforced rules, and despoil nature for profit.

Als Merkel 2021 abtrat, lag die AfD bei 10,3 %. (2017: 12,6 %).

Mandatory reading: Fascism begins with language, not tanks. With democratic elections, not a coup. And it is given free rein, thanks to people who think it won't be a big deal - until suddenly it is.
Fascisme begint met taal, niet met tanks. Met democratische verkiezingen, niet met een staatsgreep. En het krijgt vrij baan, dankzij mensen die denken dat het allemaal niet zo’n vaart zal lopen – tot het dat ineens wél doet.

An important lessons for the wider European debate to me is the - from political science completely unsurprising - dynamic that Starmer with his harsh anti-migration rhetoric is losing support amongst Labour/centre-left voters but also failing to (re)gain support from Reform/populist voters.

The belief that the effectiveness of right wing immigration scaremongering is remotely linked to actual migration statistics, and if you can get those low enough they'll be defanged, is so endearingly naive.

Like how a child raised by monks in a secluded temple might imagine political debate works.

As a German I will forever be grateful to all who fought for the liberation of Europe.

But as a historian I am looking at front pages today and must wonder: What is the point of remembering #VEDay 80 years on, what is the point of our thanks, when we are failing to protect the sacrifices made? 🧵

Term 2 Trump foreign policy - from tariffs to NATO to soft power to China and Russia - is an epic mess. One reason seems to be that the administration is operating with two conflicting, equally flawed, views of the world and the US's place in it. 🧵

Note to journalists:

You don't have to mindlessly repeat Trump's branding of the tariffs coming today as "Reciprocal" if as leaks suggest he just picks a big round number and applies it widely.

Yes, even if he claims he has 15-20% grievance against every country he targets.

Words mean things.

Le point intéressant avec ce « leak » hors norme, est que l’inimitié envers l’Europe apparaît comme un élément de pensée structurelle et une trame de l’action globale de l’administration Trump.
