A very strange film for many reasons - the cuts from silent to re-shot sound footage, the dubbing, tinting, Technicolor and often stilted dialogue. But I really enjoyed it and found some parts absolutely brilliant.

An interesting if disturbing read, which if true probably means we're fucked, pardon my French resistance. On the hand it might be all right as it's just part of the usual historical cycle.

Easily one of the greatest movies ever made with my eternal respect going to the camera crew and incredible aerial stunt team. It deserved its Oscar triumph and is still fresh at 98 years old.

Ella Raines, Robert Siodmak and Elwood Bredell, working from a brilliant Cornell Woolrich novel, create one of the greatest and most atmospheric film noirs. Shame the book's twist ending is given away early - but still superb.

Straight into my best films of the 21st-century list with its blackly-comic screenplay and fantastic, self-hating, performance from Nic Cage. Intelligent, witty and world-weary, it's a modern classic.

I started watching this recording of The Gospel at Colonus last night just to see the early number, "Stop, Do Not Go On," and ended up watching the whole thing. This is truly one of the greatest cultural creations of our time, and still too little known.
