I had the honour of introducing #TheAdventuresOfRobinHood (1938) at #Sheffield's Showroom Cinema as part of #ArtOfAction season.

Here, masterfully reworked as a Q&A by @latereviewer.bsky.social is what I said about one of the greatest stunt teams ever assembled...

Yer classic Scorsese narrative of 'This is a fun lifestyle, oh shit, #TheFeds are a-comin'!' Entertaining, great soundtrack, solid performances, plus the shock appearance of Joanna Lumley too - and entirely predictable.

My own fault really, bearing in mind I dislike the original novel and I'm no fan of DiCaprio, Maguire or Luhrmann - but I gave it a chance with an open mind. And it was as OTT, shallow and profoundly boring as I expected. Plus, it looked dreadful.

Everything about this beautifully-made Gothic classic is on point with DoP George Barnes and director Robert Stevenson creating surely the most Orson Welles-looking film Welles didn't direct (maybe parts of it)?

96 minutes of Old Hollywood gold.

Fun! Can you still do the trick?

I was a geography major, but once I finished my required courses, I took almost nothing but film classes. Huge Curtiz. Mildred Pierce was my favorite for years.

I remember those days of IMDB, too. Such a loss, though understandable.

"If there's any trouble, start shootin'..."

Bogart whistles, Bacall smoulders, drinks are imbibed, bullets fired, songs sung, double entendres given and gallons of sheer sass float around. A superb movie that places attitude over action, it's effortlessly cool and endlessly enjoyable.

I didn't care for this first time round and am curious but cautious about revisiting it.

Didn't hate it as much as I hated the book, mind.

Amazing night at the beautiful #Sheffield City Hall seeing the phenomenally-talented #BowieExperience.

Tunes (obvs.), musicianship, stagecraft, atmosphere - all incredible. It was so SO good and the audience went wild.

If you get chance to see it on tour, seize it.

"You think you could grab me another bracelet?"

Chalamet is superb, no doubt about it, and generally it's very good but it's also too long, the theme of constant objects and challenges is hammered into the ground (the whole dog subplot could just go) and parts of it are pure silliness.

Always good to see my friend, Dr. Sheldon Hall, who kindly signed my copy of his book #ArmchairCinema. The dedication includes the date he first saw my favourite film, #TheAdventuresOfRobinHood (1938), on TV.

(I can't recommend said tome highly enough, by the way.)

Maurice Jarre and Freddie Young are my heroes of this legendary epic about (red) star-crossed lovers that I saw for the first time today. All good but, yes, the score and cinematography are outstanding. Enjoyed it but no desire to see again.

"Are you going to behave from now on, Farleigh?"

Never feels too original, packed full of clichéd characters and with some parts clearly put in as talking points, however, the brilliant Barry Keoghan demonstrates his acting genius once again and the (implausible) ending was pretty decent.

"I thought all Joans were evil old women..."

A few lovely shots, great production design and nice costumes but with a Gary Barlow-lookalike hero, some unfortunate makeup, lame humour and no tension or thrills whatsoever, it slithered rather than rattled along.

A shame; I expected more.
