Today, inspired by a WSJ story about rich people seeking exclusive, private experiences which keep them from having to interact with others, I wrote about how wealthy people are basically trying to buy their way out of civil society. That's bad, folks! www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...
What gets me ranting about this stuff is not the mere fact that super rich people have crazy luxuries, because super rich people have always had crazy luxuries. It's more about how, these days, super rich people – and, increasingly, some not super rich people – are able to insulate themselves from the rest of society and avoid all of the things, be they bad or good, that create shared civic experiences. Almost every company or product offers elite status, a VIP section, or a priority line. We have political and economic incentives which increasingly encourage those with the means to take advantage of concierge healthcare plans and private schools. Those with even moderately good means can shop, dine, bank, and even vote without interacting with the public. Or, at the very least, the part of the public that is unlike themselves. Meanwhile, the instances in which people come together in commons spaces has decreased dramatically. Once upon a time just about everyone had to go to the main gate at the airport, the train station, the post office, hospitals, libraries, public schools, or any number of other places where the stuff of society happens and interact with people as rough equals irrespective of financial means. It's this very coming together in the public sphere that makes a society a society, and it's rapidly disappearing. To be sure, there have always been some very rich people who have been able to keep themselves separate and apart from the masses. The Gilded Age is probably the quintessential example of this. But it's going into overdrive in the new Digital Gilded Age in which we're living, with more and more people than ever being able to check out of civic society. Back in the day it was just the factory owner or the banker and their wastrel children living on a separate plane of existence. These days, however, the dynamic has spread into the lower executive and professional ranks, to where a great many people have siloed themselves off from the sort of everyday life almost all citizens once lived. What's more, there was once a time when holding oneself above, separate, and/or apart from everyone else like that would be something downplayed by the wealthy out of modesty or due to an obligatory nod to the conceit that the United States is not a class-based society. Today, however, being able to buy oneself out of the public sphere is considered a hallmark of success. An aspiration which is encouraged by an entire media and consumer ecosystem. I'm not above this. I've spent some time in airport lounges and VIP sections at concerts in recent years. I order more and more things online than I once did. There have been a handful of occasions when I've been able to take advantage of a private dining experience or some premium product or another, the primary selling point of which is skipping the line or avoiding the crowds. I've enjoyed it, but I feel ambivalent about it. Mostly because, however pleasant such exclusive experiences are for me in the moment, I feel that they're harmful. At least when exclusivity ceases to be a rare decadent treat and becomes the organizing principle of people's lives. I think the rise of this class apart is bad for a society which at least likes to think of itself as classless, democratic, and equal. I think that, because of it, the public sphere of life has broken down in many important respects. I think it's bad that we do not come together as a society across economic classes in anything approaching the way we did even as recently as the early 1980s, let alone the way we did in previous decades. I think it's bad for democracy and social health. It's bad because when we do not interact with others in meaningful ways, we are no longer truly stakeholders in the whole of society and we cease to be invested in our fellow man. The social and political ramifications of such a state of affairs are pretty obvious. When something is out of sight it falls out of mind. That includes other people. And when other people are an afterthought, that leads to some very dark places.

Absolutely no way to read this and not conclude that the Department of Justice has been deeply corrupted. And this is from a time when career lawyers were in place, pushing back against illegality. With firings and resignations, the politicization will just get worse.

My baby was finally discharged from the NICU after six weeks, we spent just over a week at home before he was readmitted with bronchiolitis, collapsed lung & suspected sepsis.

He’s in the PICU and is really poorly & all I can say is that RSV is a horror and if you’re pregnant please get vaccinated
