the real thing issue is that we have some groups of young men *claiming* to be driven right because of problems like male isolation when the right is not actually offering material solutions to those problems. what the right is offering is social and political power over women.

Huh, so it's for "connection" & "routine" & not because they're mostly living in multiple-occupancy rented precarious homes often converted badly into studios and flats where there is no comfortable space to work and you can hear the neighbours breathing & feel claustrophobic? OK.

There's no part of this process that can be stolen from another. It's all writing; it's all turning you into the person who can write.

As a SFF writer who is very interested in religion, in fiction and in real life:

Any attempt to lay out rules or laws or even guidelines for "how to depict religion in fiction" has not thought the matter through, IMO.

I took a basic drawing class and most of it was "look at the thing. No LOOK."

Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right?

Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.

We have never had a serious, sustained conversation in the UK about reclaiming the billions stolen from the taxpayer through corporate tax evasion, and reinvesting that stolen money in housing and public services. Never, ever. I keep hearing “it’s complicated” but it’s really not. It’s theft.

So i can see why he feels unsafe in my city.

Forget the nonsense about reviewing costs on Phase 1 of HS2, today's real news is that this government has announced in no uncertain terms that it will not be progressing with Phase 2 to Crewe, Manchester or Leeds.

Craven. Short-sighted. Hugely damaging.

I want scifi that’s MORE political. I want scifi that’s radical, and shows me things I’ve never imagined before. I want scifi that will piss someone off. I have sad, lonely, and helpless at home. What else have you got for me?

a huge part of the reason I write scifi is that it allows me to stubbornly insist that the future can be better if we make it and also that nobody gets there alone
I am once again yelling at the cloud that is every science fiction movie or tv series being a depressing dystopia with a sad white protagonist who must make gritty choices and bottle up their emotions. WE GET IT. You’re pessimistic about the future. But scifi could do so much more.
