I was just thinking it had been several days since we had a demonstration of how stupid it is that all of our web infrastructure is completely dependent on a few large companies, but thankfully CloudFlare is here to remind us.

This book came out a year ago. Had a great tour, a glowing NYT review, and was on NPR. It didn’t blow up. Not a bestseller. Didn’t get optioned. Won nothing. Didn’t earn out. Now I have no contract and I’m struggling with the next one. Being a writer is an endless war of attrition. Time to write!

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie.

An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough.

So finish the thing.

I'm gonna be a broken record here but this is unsustainable for TV, as is the incredibly short tv orders, especially when what few "hit" shows streamers have take two-three years between seasons.

Eventually studios and streamers are going to hit a wall where there aren't enough shows. 1/2
Studios are SO unwilling to take any risks. Instead they spend YEARS developing, making creators go back to the drawing board OVER & OVER instead of trusting and taking a risk. Then, by some miracle when these shows finally debut & aren't hits, things get worse. You need more shows to get more hits.
In animation we hear "We want the next Bluey". The cost of doing business used to be making a hundred shows to get a Spongebob. All the other shows? A lot will still make money, and the talent who worked on them could give you the next Bluey.

I know this first hand. When I was a child, my entire community was branded as spies and sabateurs, justifying our internment inside barbed wire camps for years without due process, trial or charge.

After screenwriting for 28 years, I'm convinced the two most important factors in selling a spec are:

1. The quality of the logline.
2. How well you fulfill the promise of the logline.

Yes, there's space outside that (thank goodness), but this is what gives you the best chance.

I understand why great filmmakers turn to streamers to get films and shows made, but it’ll never not be frustrating to see a titan like Hirokazu Koreeda have a new series that is just dumped on Netflix to near zero marketing or fanfare. They deserve better!

It is a very good show! Reminded me a bit of Ichikawa Kon's The Makioka Sisters...apparently Koreeda was in town (LA) recently talking about how to keep the JPN film industry going and financed, given the grueling labor conditions...

Just watched The Colors Within (2024) 📽️

Insanely beautiful movie with astonishing attention to detail.
The music obviously takes front stage, but all the little foley sounds are much appreciated too.
Nice to see religion being portrayed as a positive thing.

THE SUBSTANCE nomination is a game changer. I’m long on record as someone saying the Academy doesn’t need to recognize horror, but every company who makes horror is asking for their THE SUBSTANCE, their short hand for “meaningful but unflinching horror film” and things are gonna get real interesting
