You might be thinking, wait, didn't Dems win virtually every election held this year? You're forgetting that in DC, "Democrats are flailing" is not a comment on empirical reality, it is a kind of core ideological truth, a load-bearing pillar in their weltanschauung.
Opinion | Why Democrats keep flailing
Voters aren’t rejecting government. They are rejecting leaders who can’t run it effectively.

Every time CNN or another network do this “Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing” disclaimer, Dems or left-leaning pundits should light them up and say “uhh, excuse me, Dana, but Trump is very much accused of wrongdoing.”
Trump is demanding that GOP side with him over Epstein's victims, Rep Ansari tells me. She had a harrowing exchange with one victim who recounts how her mom had cancer and he exploited that.

Also note her mockery of network disclaimers on Trump. More like this, Ds:

The SNAP program is wildly over-engineered to prevent fraud. Like the food stamps that came before them, EBT accounts are only good for certain groceries. You can’t even buy a hot meal.

A universal basic income system with regular money would be better, but more susceptible to this ugly rhetoric.

Democrats ran a variety of candidates in 2025, who tailored campaigns to their constituents—all anti-Trump, but offering different economic specifics based on their locales.

It was a big tent approach and did well with voters everywhere. Presenting that as infighting is an effort to generate drama.
This NYT framing is ludicrously overstated. Sure, there are primaries. But if anything, the results showed a lot of Dems that there's a way to unify the factions around anti-Trump and affordability politics (as I try to argue in the piece/thread below).

I'd say that Trump's all-stick-no-carrot style of despotism rather broadly connects the democracy and the economic argument; anyway if you're not out there saying that authoritarianism makes us all financially poorer off, maybe politics isn't your thing
The bizarre media narrative that Dems must choose between anti-Trump and affordability politics reflects a broad reluctance to accept that Trump is really unpopular. The way forward is a fusion of the two. They are often one and the same. 8/

More Democrats should get more combative with the media, in particular by calling out questions that have an unspoken premise of "GOP voters are realer Americans than you," or in this case, "the president can break the law if voters in a city choose a mayor according to their own preferences."
In the 1st question of his brief interview with Mamdani. Anderson Cooper reports Trump’s strongman threats to punish NYC if the Mayoral candidate is elected, as if he gets to select where funding goes according to his whims, & then asks whether voters will find it “worth the hassle” to vote for him.

the thing you should learn from this is the media hates democrats
Under Dem presidents, Dems endlessly debate whether prez dares tout good econ news out of fear of seeming "out of touch." Trump makes up horseshit about creating "record" jobs and media never calls him "out of touch." Let's learn from this.

Exchange on this point:

Democrats should commit to expanding the Supreme Court and ignoring all of Donald Trump's pardons issued prior to charges. It's what Republicans would do if the roles were reversed.
Reminder that while Todd Blanche is threatening to arrest Democrats, he's also one of the officials who decides whether to hand $230 million in taxpayer money to Trump, which he very well may do. That should secure him that pardon if he needs it.

Absolutely no one did not foresee this as a consequence of the (increasingly-aptly-captioned) Trump v. United States ruling.* Corrupt judges enabling corruption.

*Facially anti-Constitutional and so legally null and void.
Great points from @leahlitman.bsky.social explaining how conditions for Trump's $230 million heist were partly created by SCOTUS, the immunity decision, and unitary executive theory. Trump cited immunity ruling in docs seeking this money.

So much packed in here:

Because bigotry is confused with patriotism and because these “patriots” are seen by the press corps as the only authentic Americans. Everyone else, and I mean this, is second class.
"When Democrats or liberals question the morals of Trump voters, the press treats it as a major scandal. But Trump expresses a desire to cover protestors with feces — essentially saying that anyone who disagrees with him is shit — the media is barely willing to talk about it. Why?"
Trump shits on America. Why doesn’t the media care?
For many news orgs, Trump’s fascist coalition is uniquely legitimate.

You are both right on the correct synthesis: Dems should have more “moderate” policy positions and take fewer and higher salience ones, but also be more aggressive about resetting political institutions and establishing a more effective government with fewer veto points.

It's a failure of Dem messaging and a sign of weakness that Steve Bannon has no problem just coming out and saying this. The president is not The President. He's just a confused old man who goes on TV to air his grudges. Stephen Miller is The President, and he's the one pushing this hateful agenda.
Hey @billkristolbulwark.bsky.social,I asked Steve Bannon directly if he thinks Miller will now unleash the state on groups that describe ICE as "authoritarian," and he said: "Yes," adding that Miller is "in charge." cc @mcopelov.bsky.social

90% of elected Dems do not know how to fight, do not want to fight, did not run for office to fight, and are not smart enough or principled enough to fight. They entered office so they could fiddle with policy and feel important, they want to hide until it blows over, and will find excuses to do so.

There are people in public life clearly and accurately stating the danger to America at this bizarre moment. Those people need support from every Conservative and Liberal American who find our Constitution worth preserving.
Pritzker on Trump sending troops into cities: "He has other aims other than fighting crime... he would like to stop the elections in 2026 or frankly take control of those elections. He'll just claim there's some problem with an election and then he's got troops on the ground that can take control."
