My three non-fiction best book reads from the last year.
All strongly recommended.

#1) The Big One. by Mike Osterholm

Strongly support all the recommendations in here.

We need to be better prepared not only for the BIG ONE, but for the annual respiratory viruses that inflict us.

Argentina's 1990s preschool expansion program appears to have been a smashing success.

The program increased high school completion by a whole 11.9 percentage points.

The authors estimate that for every $1 spent, the preschool expansion generated about $11 in benefits.

As a thoroughly russified Qazaq kid growing up in the 1980s Almaty, I had deeply internalized the Russo-centric view of Qazaq-speaking Qazaqs as being rural and backwards. Embarrassingly, for many years, I failed to understand what now seems so painfully obvious. 1/10

Nearly two years ago, in September of 2023, Doug Ford made a promise.

Just wondering if anyone has moved into their 1,600-square-foot home, with a finished basement, a backyard with a fence, and a paved driveway.

Did you pay less than $500,000 for your home like Doug promised?

Canada’s new Minister of Justice & Attorney @seanfraser.bsky.social has an important first job: making sure it’s illegal for personal information on Canadians to go to ICE or US Homeland Security without formal requests thru govt. I think Canadians & PM Carney will be strongly onside. #ElbowsUp

Excellent thread.
In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%.
While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired.
Let's learn more.

And it is *possible* for the opposition to win in competitive authoritarian systems, particularly unconsolidated and semi-consolidated ones.
Again, elections happen under competitive authoritarianism. What doesn’t happen is legal accountability for criminals allied with the government, or elections that are fully free & fair. We already don’t have those. If the claim is we’re still going to be a full democracy in 2026/8, I have bad news.
