His sexism is pretty openly expressed in his famous book, which all molecular biologists of my generation had read as teenagers. Unfortunately that sexism was quietly shared by many male scientists of his generation, so he got a pass for it, at least in those days.

This was before widespread knowledge of his racism, obviously, since he was invited as a speaker to Oxford university. But I and several colleagues were struck by the cruel humour and the ableism behind it, so unsurprised when his reputation began to unravel.

I was physically present at a talk he did in early 1990s in the big Oxford Uni Zoology lecture theatre, when discussing prenatal DNA testing he sniggered as he mused that one day disabled people with congenital conditions might sue parents for not having aborted them. 😑

Very funny to simultaneously learn that this random name rattling around from 9th grade biology was still kicking until last week and that he was also a huge piece of shit. Onward and upward.

I really don't think he had a brilliant mind. It looked like it. I was taught that. I read all kinds of stuff that said he was brilliant. But now... I believe he had a moment of luck because he cheated. He spied on the work of a woman more brilliant than he could ever imagine. Literally.

Thank you for posting this, Brittany! I would never have seen it, otherwise.

Masterful and excoriating indeed.

He basically stole the discovery of DNA from Franklin, talked about her like she was a glorified secretary in his book, and was generally an awful person.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

Many many hours and many many ATC delays later, I’ll be getting in at 3am rather than 3pm. If you have any upcoming flights, good fucking luck. Consider taking the train

Wouldn't be surprised if all air transportation gets canceled. Will be a good preview of what a national general strike can really do - shut down the country.

It’s a sleepy Saturday morning and JFK is currently in SWAP, a “severe rather avoidance plan.” It’s causing major departure delays.

But there’s no severe weather (or any weather of any significance) on the east coast right now 🤔

This Trump Flight Cancelations situation isn’t sustainable. Up to 4.5 hour delays at JFK on a clear sunny day AFTER FAA put its flight cap in place. The national aviation system will grind to a halt soon with these ATC staffing issues.

In the FAA operations plan that went into effect at 2300 UTC, there are 37 separate staffing triggers. Staffing triggers activate when too few controllers are available for that area and require traffic modifications either through reroutes or arrival/departure rate reductions.

The desire for extreme capital concentration at the expense of everyone else is sociopathy.

It should never have been taught in business schools, normalized as competition, idolized to the point of electing leaders of corruption.

One of the unacknowledged advantages of this awful era is that it's revealing for all to see the putrid connections between great wealth and great power.

The intentions of the oligarchs are fully exposed and more blatant than ever.

But remember: We outnumber the oligarchs.
