My thoughts on Steven Guilbeault's recent resignation from Carney's cabinet.

Nothing in Mark Carney's budget makes me believe he cares about fighting climate change, because the plan is to give hand-outs to all of the industries at the root of the problem.

I wrote about this in the Guardian a few weeks ago and concluded that we’re building a surveillance state lockstep with the Americans.
This is a great thread 🧵 and I encourage you to read it because Canadians need to be aware of how precious our data is and how it can be weaponized against us

Promoters of carbon capture and storage are serious about one thing: keeping the oil and gas industry alive long enough to profit as much as they can off of destroying the planet.
Liberals have been very concerned about mis- and disinformation in recent years, so when Mark Carney says carbon capture will allow for “decarbonized” oil, we should be clear that he’s engaging in active disinformation about climate change to please Danielle Smith and the Alberta oil industry.

Every nth of a degree is worth keeping down and every life that will be in jeopardy because of climate collapse is worth fighting for.

There is no "too late." There will always be work to do.
“David Suzuki is right to criticize people for not working to stop the climate catastrophe, but the crisis is forcing people to act and it's never too late to start fighting for a worthy cause. Our lives and those of countless future generations depend on it.”

An editorial by @taylornoakes.com.
A reply to David Suzuki: Never give up fighting climate change
David Suzuki’s recent argument that “it’s too late” to fight back against climate change may be premature.

It actually breaks my heart to think that people are turning to ChatGPT to mitigate their loneliness.

We're all struggling to create and then maintain deep, meaningful connections (and capitalism stacks the odds against us), but I can't think of a worse solution than generative AI. But I get why.

On top of austerity, we’re also looking at further deregulation. The political right did a great job of vilifying Trudeau to set the stage for a right-wing turn in Canadian politics.

Here’s the thing: unfettered gov access to personal data means they can easily target you for whatever purpose and you have no control.
Also: the likelihood of consolidating data is higher, which means the government can access your data to track you
I cannot tell you how dangerous this tech is
I don’t think most people are aware of the implications of all of this data access by government. This is one of them.

I also say this everyone I talk to about climate change, which is probably everyone I talk to.
a point I make over and over re: climate change is that there’s no point at which it’s time to throw up your hands and give up, because each tenth of a degree you can prevent is worth it

2C is better than 2.1C is better than 2.2C and so on and so forth
