Political tensions are threatening the future of the largest freshwater ecosystem on Earth.
The US and Canada have long managed the Great Lakes together. That era could be ending.

You might ask: how is it possible that Republicans are just rolling over and accepting this?

The answer is that they're terrified of crossing Elon Musk. They think he can kill them in primaries and protect them in general elections.

Beat Brad Schimel in Wisconsin on 4/1, and that starts changing.
So it appears DOGE has decreed that Social Security administration will no longer provide phone support. At all. This is in addition to shutting down a ton of local SSA offices. www.axios.com/2025/03/17/s...
Leaked memo: DOGE plots to cut Social Security phone support
Changes could break the system, former officials say.

Extraordinary moment — Nancy Pelosi issues a statement calling on Democratic senators to reject the House funding bill, i.e. to defy Chuck Schumer.

"Democratic senators should listen to the women," she says, referring to Murray/DeLauro who want a 1-month stopgap bill instead.

the tesla protest might objectively be among the most successful in history already just in terms of immediate response, if you consider they forced the world’s most powerful person & its most wealthy to fully degrade themselves like used car salesmen on live TV while the whole world watched agog.

You know people are furious when they show up at an 8am protest at @schumer.senate.gov house.

Chuck you are betraying us. It’s not too late to change your mind and actually fight back!

interesting that sen. fetterman’s phone appears to be off the hook this morning…
The weeks of performative “resistance” from those in my party were limited to undignified antics.

Voting to shut the government down will punish millions or risk a recession.

I disagree with many points in the CR, but I will never vote to shut our government down.

In case you were wondering, they are going full-out antisemitic against the Jewish judge that blocked Khalil’s deportation.

Because none of this is about countering antisemitism. It’s about weaponizing (real) antisemitism to undermine democracy and the rule of law.

Republicans want one thing and it’s fucking disgusting (tax cuts for the rich funded by healthcare cuts for the poor)
BREAKING: House Republicans just passed their budget resolution 217-215 that would virtually guarantee deep cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, all to fund a major tax break for the ultrawealthy... and still add trillions to the national debt.

Two issues I want to mention.

The federal government decided to use grants (competitive/block etc) as a way to fund/pay nonprofits to handle government’s own policy failures.

The system is fucked, absolutely. But defunding it ends much of the scarce social safety net we have as a country.
