a good time to bump this
This month's bonus episode is about Bari Weiss, who overcame her inability to say anything interesting to become the billionaire-whispering head of a small media empire.

The takeaway here is that there are times when Antonin Scalia valued diversity in elite institutions (when it helped him get a prestigious job he really wanted), and times when he did not (when a Black person got to go to Harvard) ballsandstrikes.substack.com/p/antonin-sc...
Antonin Scalia Was a Diversity Hire
The late justice spent his career ridiculing the notion that elite institutions had any interest in diversity. He might not have made the Supreme Court without it.

At his confirmation hearings, Scalia was asked if it would have been OK for Reagan to pick him among other qualified candidates *because* of his Italian heritage, in order to make the Court more diverse. "No, I think that is a good thing," Scalia said. ballsandstrikes.substack.com/p/antonin-sc...

Hi folks! A few thoughts on this essay, and the questions that we *should* be asking, rather than the ones this Army officer seems inclined to answer. I haven’t done a CMR thread in a while so I’m overdue. 🧵
Hard to imagine a more sinister & dangerous argument, couched in euphemism & high-minded language. "This essay does not argue liberalism will collapse, only that [US] military officers should be intellectually (and spiritually) prepared for alternatives." warontherocks.com/2025/10/the-...

Shameful behavior from my alma mater
Administrators at Indiana University baselessly fired the student media director and ordered the student paper to cease its print edition, so it'd sure be a shame if this excellent digital front page were to be widely shared today

It's very striking how clearly they seem to see what's right in front of their faces in way that so many others -- law firm partners, university presidents, members of congress, and on and on -- refuse to.

Having people like @lorenraeds.bsky.social as a guest lecturer on the topic at SAMS was a huge benefit.
Military officers should have civ-mil relations embedded as a core part of their PME directly at commissioning, not once they reach field grade

Maybe then it might sink in

This is precisely the problem, the refusal by centrist elites to differentiate between challenging ideas and debunked lies. It's not "challenging" to hear that black people are stupid or gay people are degenerates, it's just wrong.
They never complete the sentence, ie "...educators and students must face ideas we find offensive, such as the claim that Black women lack the brain processing power to fly planes or serve on the Supreme Court or that gay people should be stoned to death." Pretty telling that they don't!
The President of Barnard College calls for more controversial speakers like the late Kirk (without citing any of his controversial views), a position at odds with what Barnard colleagues describe as a track record of censoring events and speakers on Palestine. (1/4) www.nytimes.com/2025/09/17/o...
