Fuck ice
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

2.977 people died on 9/11.
The daily quote for ICE is 3000.
I think putting it in terms like that puts it into perspective.
They want one 9/11 every day.

The right are now saying that the 14th amendment has a shelf life, as it was only made for the children of slaves and isn’t applicable anymore. Nowhere in the wording does it say this. And ask them if the 2nd only applies to flintlock muskets and see what their answer is…

There are only three political positions in America today

1) I like the fascism

2) I'll acquiesce to the fascism (reasons for this one vary: cowardice, access, denial, misguidedly thinking that acquiescence is savvy, etc)

3) I oppose the fascism

The rest is details

law professors have been unable to understand why people are actually concerned about this case. it’s not about nationwide injunctions per se, it’s about a court that waited until the issue hurt the GOP, and then intervened on behalf of one of the most egregious constitutional violations we’ve seen
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson called yesterday's decision about nationwide injunctions "an existential threat to the rule of law."

The purpose of a democratic political system is to channel the will of majorities and limit the rise of tyranny.

But, our system channels the rise of tyranny and limits the expression of majorities.

Authoritarianism is here because our system failed. The system is the foundation of the problem.

The Rogue Court vs Modern Democracy

I wrote this two years ago, after the Court effectively abolished affirmative action. It’s even more obvious now: America can accept the Roberts Court as legitimate and its rulings as the final word - or it can have democracy in a pluralistic society.

Not both.

Assassinations and bombing plots against Democrats just aren’t as newsworthy as a Democrat proposing a pilot program of city-run grocery stores, sorry.
This is 100% true, just as the press spent ZERO time on the attempted mass assassination of the entirety of democratic leadership through pipe bombs just a few years ago. It’s literally never even discussed! A MAGA terrorist tried to kill all of the leading dems!
I can't tell if it's because I'm too NYC focused but does it feel like the news cycle spent more time crashing out on the fact that NYC picked a brown Muslim dude as is primary candidate then it did on a right wing extremist who shot 2 Minnesota legislators killing one, her husband and dog?

to make a finer point: if the issue of nationwide injunctions reached the Court maybe half a dozen times in a few years, and they let them stand every time but one, is the rule *really* that nationwide injunctions are disfavored?

Yo wtf
Miami just canceled its November election & pushed it to 2026. No public vote, just canceled.

Mayor Suarez & Joe Carollo get to stick around an extra year.

This feels like a power grab. If one city can delay elections for “participation,” what’s to stop others from doing it to silence opposition?
