Yikes 😬 an official U.S. government account just referred to Americans as “imbecilic morons.” That’s… a choice.

The reported total I have seen from Saturday’s protests is over 7 million, or around 2.1% of the US population.
one category of show prep material for TRMS staff is something we've always called "subway reading".

it's something that's not exactly current events or new reporting... but nevertheless relevant food for thought given the news we're in.

today's subway reading:

The '3.5% rule': How a small minority can change the world
Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts – and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.

Hi American Parents,

As a Dad, don’t take advice from semi-sentient greasy dish cloths.
Ask your doctor.
Trump: "I think it has -- I think it's very bad. They're pumping, it looks like they're pumping into a horse. You have a little child, a little fragile child, and you get a vat of 80 different vaccines, I guess. 80 different blends. And they pump it in. So ideally, a woman won't take Tylenol."

Trump doesn't seem to see that some people are still immune to his threats.

Jack White criticized Trump's Oval Office decor. The White House then called White a "washed-up, has-been loser... masquerading as a real artist." And White, undeterred, posted an absolutely blistering takedown in response.

Here's Colbert on July 14 making fun of Paramount for paying Trump $16 million. It's hard not to see CBS canceling his show through this lens.

"I believe this kind of complicated financial settlement with a sitting government official has a technical name in legal circles. It's big fat bribe."

“Colbert isn’t going anywhere for 10 months and it’s hard to imagine him agreeing to stick around for a swan song in which his content is being restricted by the network that canceled the show. So let’s assume that he’s going to spend a season lampooning Trump, even as a lame duck.”

This was Vin Scully's call of Henry Aaron's 715th home run. Tonight Major League Baseball cut off the first sentence, starting it with the "What a marvelous moment" part because they don't want to anger the white supremacists who run our country and of whom Rob Manfred is an ardent supporter.

“Magic Tree House author Mary Pope Osborne, children’s poet Shel Silverstein and Calvin and Hobbes cartoonist Bill Watterson have joined Judy Blume, Sarah J. Maas, Eric Carle and Kurt Vonnegut” have been banned from some Tennessee school libraries.

TLDR: Fahrenheit 451 is on this list.
How profoundly sad. The kids deprived of reading Calvin and Hobbes are the kids who need them the most. My brother put it best: "We know we’re fucked when they come for your cartoon stuffed tigers."

Let's go sit in the grass and crack open "The Days are Just Packed."

I was blown away by Forgiveness at the Stratford Festival, an overdue import from western Canada that’s been given a stunning production in the Tom Patterson Theatre.

Another Critic’s Pick for this one — gosh, what a season so far.

Not gonna pretend like I know anything about Carney’s politics because I don’t, but I watched his speech yesterday and he essentially told Trump to fuck off and now Trump’s speaking about him with a modicum of respect.

I feel like there’s a lesson in there somewhere.
Trump drops the demeaning "governor" stuff and calls Carney by his correct title

In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%.
While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired.
Let's learn more.
