In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

The surrender caucus secured yes votes from Democrats who aren't facing re-election this cycle, but four of them have Democratic governors who can pick their replacement.

If you live in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maine or Virginia this is an easy and effective way to make your anger clear.
Yup, and the damage isn’t so much in the story as in the proof of weakness. Trump now knows he has new torture tools to make Dems do what he wants. It’s why at least one of the 7 capitulators oughta be run out of office now, mid session. Get that number down to 6. www.offmessage.net/p/16-thought...

I don't care how good you are, I will donate to your primary opponent unless you call for Schumer's removal
None of the 8 are up in 2026, this is the trick Schumer is playing on the rubes. The entire caucus is unified on the deal. These 8 are just taking the heat because they can afford to.

The only reasonable position is to primary every D who won't call for removing Schumer.

An update from the NWS on the potential snow event. Read it.

One key: “…As a result, the expectation is for the lake effect snow bands to be unusually intense with peak snow rates of 3 to locally 5 inches per hour, frequent lightning and thunder, and pockets of hail.”

Cross-posting my discovery of the day. This guy could have been the Shoup of design review.

He's was a random architect working from home in Bernal Heights. Never had a faculty position.

He churned out scores of academic papers and one great book.

A middle school kid just came to the door dressed as "An AI Overlord." I asked if she was good or evil. "Evil, of course." I laughed and said the future was in good hands, to which she replied, "No, it's not."

On the East Wing and the coming ballroom, which is more Tsarskoye Selo than Monticello (a line I thought of too late to put in the piece)
‘The demolition of the Pruitt-Igoe housing complex in St Louis in 1972 marked the point at which a hidden process, the ebbing of confidence, became spectacular. And so it is with the East Wing.’

Will Wiles finds the symbolism of recent events almost too on-the-nose
So, goodbye East Wing. What’s next for the West Wing?
The dissolution of certainties about American power now has its perfect visual emblem – in the form of bulldozers reducing part of the White House to rubble, writes Will Wiles

Talk to me about removing food dyes when every kid in the U.S. has enough to eat.

It was Wrigleyville, the home of the Cubs!
A friend recently told me that they didn’t think ICE would deploy tear gas in well to do neighborhoods with a high density of white people. I understood their thinking, but disagreed. Today, they gassed Lakeview. Nothing is off limits to these people.

Brazilian navigator Tamara Klink says she encountered "very little" sea ice on her solo sail through the Northwest Passage -- a rare feat that would have been impossible without an icebreaker ship three decades ago.
