I keep thinking about my grandfather, Howard Fast, who was jailed by McCarthy, history continues to rhyme.
A key through line from the modern conservative movement as it emerged in the 1950s to today’s “counter-revolutionary” Trumpist Right is the anti-leftism as the defining sentiment and project. No limiting principle, just “Whatever it takes to defeat the Left” - that’s the path to extremism.
There's much overlap between the American "anti-leftist" tradition and the American conservative tradition. I'd argue that the "anti-leftist" tradition (with roots in the more McCarthyite/fascistic threads of the anti-communist tradition) attracted "conservatives" with a more authoritarian bent.
