We're not in the midst of a mass extinction, but we're potentially at the start of one. Fossil CO2 has taken us halfway to the biggest tipping point of all, so I'd like to call myself not a #climateactivist but an #OceanAcidificationActivist.

Breaching a “carbon threshold” could lead to mass extinction
Today’s carbon dioxide emissions may trigger a reflex in the carbon cycle with devastating consequences, according to a new MIT study.

Climate-fueled hurricane Melissa is in "extreme rapid intensification" now. Already a cat. 4 hurricane with winds of 225 km/h, having added 65 km/h in just 12 hours.
Looking very bad for Jamaica.

As Hurricane #Melissa approaches Jamaica, we look back to a similar event in August 1903.

The rainfall from that storm would have been more intense in today’s warmer climate.

#Melissa will likely drop more rain now than it would have done a century ago.

That's according to the latest tipping points report that came out last week.

I think the discourse is very fractured. A reasonable % of the public, myself included, doesn’t know what to do with this sort of thread at this point beyond battening down the hatches. I volunteer for a climate org, contact my reps, vote for climate, and live moment to moment, and that’s all I got.

As @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social found, it’s the msgs “others care” + “there is hope/solns” that catalyze convos, policy advocacy & action.

One of the hardest lessons for me – as a scientist – is to trust that these actions yield results when, usually, I can’t measure or plot them!

It’s similar to being a teacher – someone you taught might end up changing the world, but you might not know it. Or you’d only hear about it years later.
