I said it would get worse very quickly. By tomorrow we will have completed the most dangerous & frightening 24 hours thus far of Trump 2.0. Just to name a few:
1. Defiance of a court order by sending migrants to Sudan without due process (despite clear DP decision SCOTUS) & Dist. CT. order.

This one student, Mohsen Madhawi, has more courage than the entire Republican Party, billionaires, media personalities, powerful law firms, and corporate institutions who all bent the knee to Trump.
BREAKING: Palestinian activist and Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi walks out of ICE detention after a Vermont judge ordered his release.

"I am saying it clear and loud to President Trump and his Cabinet: I am not afraid of you," he said.

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale
NSF has posted an “update on priorities.”

They’re canceling all “DEI and misinformation/disinformation” grants.

And the guidance on how to fulfill the longstanding, legally mandated Broadening Participation requirement is utterly incoherent.

I had been doubtful that we were going to have a "this is the crisis moment" with Trump, as opposed to "everything about this is a destructive catastrophe."

But the Abrego Garcia case is the crisis moment.

💥🪧Happening right now in Budapest:

🇭🇺 Anti-government protesters have occupied four bridges, opposing Viktor Orbán’s crackdown on freedom of assembly under the guise of “child protection.”

🗣️ Though aimed at the Pride march, Orbán’s law threatens banning any kind of protests or rally.

Rumeysa Ozturk must not be deported. You can't kidnap someone off the street for their political views — this isn't Moscow.

She has every right to speak her mind. I've contacted the Administration. I want answers.

The battle over Columbia has sadly given me a ton of deja vu of the Erdoğan government's takeover of Turkey's Boğaziçi University in recent years. @abuaardvark.bsky.social has nicely drawn that connection here -- and reminded us of the importance of student and faculty resistance:
Columbia and the next front on the war on academia - it’s not just punishing students. Trump’s demands that a private university adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism and put MESAAC into receivership would do damage far beyond one campus. My new piece.

Just to be clear, this is a faculty member reporting a recent student at his institution to a fascist regime because he disagrees with the student’s political views. Absolutely chilling and vile.
In case you missed it, the day before Mahmoud Khalil’s detention by Ice none other than Shai Davidai tweeted at Rubio demanding his deportation.

And once he was apprehended, he felt these were legit “consequences” for him protesting.

A faculty member @columbiauniversity.bsky.social the shameful.
