This blows my mind every time I run across it. We understood perfectly well how to teach people to read, it worked effectively for decades, and then we just decided ... not to do that any more. I think the best analogue is the history of treating scurvy.

Also, with politics how they are, I'm doubtful that beginning the path back would do much in the near term, because people would want to wait and see what significance Farage and the Tories' inevitable responses [we'll reverse anything, over our dead bodies, etc] would have.

...personality. I doubt production issue 'lines to take' but there are plenty of ways they do manipulate participants - eg grouping them for the brekkie arrival & production dictates who gets into which car, it's not random. So a sense of allegiance could be deliberated fostered by those means.

instead of saying this was good strategy, maybe senate dems should say: "the republicans were going to kill people by starving them to death, and because we aren't monsters, we decided to let this fight go. We'll keep fighting. Stop electing monsters."
