Federal Criminal Defense Attorney, mostly indigent defense, probably working for free now that the Treasury is being looted.

At the threshold of hell.

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.

What's being "protected" is not "free speech" but rather the RIGHT for white men to be white supremacists in public without any criticism or any consequences. I hope that's clear.

The following fucking day. Because that ensures the illusion of due process without giving any real meaning to this essential right.
Trump on Fox & Friends: "One thing I say is we have to have quick trials. I called it quick trial. 'Cause in China they do have quick trials, you know? ... They should have a trial the following day."

When are we going to get beyond this ridiculous phase where scholars and journals argue that we’re approaching fascism and just admit that it’s already fucking here.

Yes, I tell this to my clients all the time “if you didn’t do anything wrong, go ahead and talk to the cops. They’ll just embarrass themselves.”

Moron.
Why can't we just let the justice system play out its course? If Bolton did nothing illegal (likely true) then DOJ just ends up embarrassing itself.

I did my best to compile as many protest safety notes as possible into a one page foldout zine! Coincidentally…it seems the file has breached containment…like it’s available for anyone to print or hand out 👀⚖️

Received emails this morning informing us that the IRS has locked the court out of the system that handles all of our payments, payments to expert witnesses, court reporters for transcript services, interpreters. There are probably other vendor types I’m not thinking of but this is pretty shocking.

As defense attorney, sometimes you’re not left with much and just have to go with any defense you’ve got, but damn is this a dangerous defense. The terrible tension between zealous representation and making terrible case law in one headline.
The white supremacist gunman who murdered 23 people at an El Paso WalMart in 2019 believed he was acting at the direction of President Trump, his defense lawyers say. "“He thought he had to stop the invasion because that’s what his president was telling him."
Patrick Crusius believed he was fulfilling Trump’s wishes in El Paso attack, his attorney says
Patrick Crusius told his attorney that he massacred people in an El Paso Walmart because President Donald Trump wanted him to stop a Hispanic invasion.

“The unpreparedness of the educated classes, the lack of practical links between them and the mass of the people, their laziness, and, let it be said, their cowardice at the decisive moment of the struggle will give rise to tragic mishaps.” - Frantz Fanon

My first post on this platform two(?) months ago was paranoid about this exact scenario.
Trump's chief digital asset officer Bo Hines said the US is now considering selling #gold from reserves to fund the purchase of #BTC for a strategic #crypto reserve as part of a budget-neutral strategy.

At what point do you @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social stop being dignified and actually fight for our country, you pathetic joke of a representative. I will actively work for whomever primaries you eventually. Fighting for our country’s survival IS dignified.

Considering that a lot of these oligarchs are also large holders of bitcoin, what if all you little guys who still have bitcoin picked a day and just all sold in order to actually cause some damage to their balance sheets?

The other path, the one that seems more likely under the current state of things, is that the funding for this necessary and important work will be eliminated, and with it, any hope we have of salvaging the rule if law, leading to summary executions without due process

The economic cost of a federal death penalty case has been estimated to be over 1 million dollars. This means we’re standing at a crossroads-one path leads to unnecessary waste of resources to carry out a cruel and unusual punishment. That’s the optimistic path.

Perhaps it’s a good thing that the need was not great enough to qualify more of us for that work. But here we are.
February 12, 2025 at 5:45 PM
We have arrived at a point in our American experiment where indigent federal defendants are entitled to the assistance of two attorneys who are specifically qualified fo accept death penalty cases. I’m not one of these attorneys-I know some who are, but there are not nearly enough of them.
February 12, 2025 at 5:44 PM
We received some guidance from the Federal Defender to prepare us for a “significant increase in death penalty cases” here in Chicago. It is impossible to overstate how demoralizing this inevitability feels.
