20 years ago, at around about this point in September, I got my first job in publishing. I was such a green little graduate and my bosses kindly looked past that and started teaching me everything. So here’s what I know about publishing 🧵

How many editors does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Not sure about this wording: it could be read as meaning editors have sex in light bulbs! Also, do we really "screw in" UK light bulbs? Don't we tend to use bayonet caps? Rewrite and bring it back in your own time, OK?

Have you finished yet?

This statement from Jonathan Joss's husband is heart breaking.

No, headline writers, he wasn't "killed in an argument with a neighbor." He was *deliberately murdered* for being gay right after his dog was decapitated.

Bet the murderer calls himself a "Christian."

THIS is why Pride is important.

Nigel Farage says abortion laws are “utterly ludicrous.”

Decriminalise abortion and make it a protected human right.
Women’s rights are under threat from the far right. Nigel Farage just called our current abortion provisions “utterly ludicrous” – and others in power are paying attention. A vote in Parliament could ...

Well. I am feeling hugely overwhelmed at figuring out a timeline for my self-publishing strategy. For anyone in the same boat - I’ve worked in publishing for 20 years but doing it all alone is HARD

I love Vinted - getting some bargains and also rehousing things I no longer wanted. But being asked to leave feedback on what someone was like as a buyer?! Can we all chill out a bit?!

This. Very effective systems already exist if you want to quote a song, poem etc in your book - so how can these AI bozos claim it would all be too hard?!
Funny, every writer in the UK knows how it'd work. You'd ask @alcs.co.uk to organise it. Seeing as how it's EXACTLY WHAT THEY ALREADY DO.
This is such a remarkable thing to admit.

I keep seeing people talking about how tough it is querying and I'm going to say something direct that may not sit well with some of you:

Querying is a dress rehearsal for publishing

The rejection, ghosting, stress, ambiguity, and disappointment continues at every stage. It's part of the job.

Been down at Meta's UK HQ to join a protest by @societyofauthors.bsky.social about the theft of books for the purposes of AI. A multi-billion dollar company using books then not paying for them stinks & is in no-one's interests.

At the @societyofauthors.bsky.social we are speaking out strongly against this 'opt out' scheme, which places the burden on creators to monitor & notify. It would be like having to put notes on your wallet that say 'Robber, don't steal this'.
- They repeat the misleading claim that existing UK copyright law is uncertain (it isn’t)
- They suggest an opt-out scheme would give rights holders more control over how their works are used than they currently have (this is false; licensing is currently required by law...
