When did hominids learn to adapt to extreme climates?

Check this fantastic article to find out!

It was a great task to be one of the handling editors for this publication that advances our understanding of our species´ ecological adaptability.
Homo erectus was able to adapt to and survive in desert-like environments at least 1.2 million years ago, according to a paper in Communications Earth & Environment. The findings suggest that behavioural adaptations included returning repeatedly to specific rivers and ponds for fresh water. 🧪 🏺

Homo erectus adapted to hyper-arid climatic conditions one million years ago through the strategic use of rivers and ponds, and this facilitated geographic expansion within and beyond Africa, as shown by multi-proxy data from Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania.

Advising governments about science is essential but difficult. So train people to do it. A great scientist doesn’t necessarily make an effective science adviser — but schooling and practice can help to bridge the gap.

Women leave academia at higher rates than men at every career stage, and attrition is especially high among three groups: tenured faculty, women in non-STEM fields, and women employed at less prestigious institutions, a #ScienceAdvances analysis finds.
Gender and retention patterns among U.S. faculty
Women faculty are more likely to leave their jobs than men, most often due to workplace climate, rather than work-life balance.

Disaster is a function of three things: exposure, vulnerability, and hazard.

As climate change pushes up the hazard rates for wildfire, flood, hurricane & more, lack of adaptation and maladaptation on the part of both public and private entities is increasing vulnerability.

Scientists don’t yet understand why temperatures have been steadily spiking above the projections. But what they do understand is bad enough.
