anyways hi. I’m Cal, I have two cats (Lemon & June), and I’m mostly here to talk about books (sff) and sports (cfb, etc), with some tv & movies sprinkled in here and there. I’m usually a lurker on social media but I thought I’d try something different here 👋

one more cab calloway thing: he performed "minnie the moocher" in blues brothers, which was a 1931 song in a 1980 movie, the modern equivalent would be aerosmith performing "back in the saddle" in a movie released this year, you're all welcome

When I turned 30 I had not yet written my first published book or my first published novel and did not know (or know of) some of the most important people in my life. I didn't know how much my life could still change, and did, after the age of 30. There is so much your life still yet to live.
Those who are 35+, what advice do you have for people just entering their 30s?

Also, here is a thought: I wonder how much "not feeling like an adult" is correlated with impostor syndrome.

the fatal flaw with the Bluesky is dying proposition is that it ignores the broader truth that I am also dying, as are you, and everybody you know. By dying Bluesky lets us know that it’s one of us, that it shares in our beauty and our pain. Grow or die? No, there is no “or.” Bluesky understands

Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:

1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;

2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;

3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

Turns out the Turing Test has less to do with how convincing a computer can be mimicking human intelligence and more to do with how gullible the humans are, also seemingly mimicking human intelligence.

This is even more impressive when you consider that she made almost all of them (6? 7?) in the second half. She was so hot in the second half I genuinely thought she couldn’t miss 🔥🔥🔥

I’m at a country music concert where the target is like 15-25 year old girls/women and I have never felt less in touch with what’s considered trendy fashion than I am right now

I (seasonally) travel for work and I recently went down to Zebulon, Georgia. I’ve made it a goal to visit local coffee shops + bookstores when I can, and today I got to visit the absolutely adorable used bookstore A Novel Experience. The staff was incredible and I loved their displays!

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies.

Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.
