Abrupt and alarming changes in the icy Antarctic region call for urgent measures. We have the means to cut emissions and limit further warming. Geoengineering projects only raise false hopes and divert resources.
Polar warming: Abrupt changes in Antarctic call for emissions cuts not geoengineering
The polar regions are undergoing alarming climate changes, particularly in Antarctica, where ice loss is accelerating. A study warns that geoengineering solutions are unlikely to be effective, distracting from essential emission reduction efforts. Immediate, evidence-based actions are necessary to combat climate change and achieve net-zero emissions to stabilize global temperatures.

The UK gov has just published new guidance for environmental impact assessments for oil & gas projects. Despite reports/industry spin, it includes a genuinely robust, credible approach to assessing the emissions caused by burning oil & gas. Let's take a look! 🧵

“1.5°C should absolutely be our target — but in no sense will it slow or stop sea level rise from melting ice sheets.”
Sea level will rise fast even if we limit global warming to 1.5°C
Satellite observations show the ice sheets are melting faster than expected, and slowing sea level rise to a manageable rate would require lowering the global temperature below the current level
