Stand by "the people of Venezuela" is the classic colonial lie! You do not stand by a people while destroying their economy, undermining their sovereignty, and endorsing coups. I guess Putin made a mistake in not kidnapping Zelensky during Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Would the BBC and the Guardian have calmly explained back then that the Ukrainian president had been "captured" and was due to face trial in Moscow?

Yes. And the danger is not an accident or a personality flaw of bad leaders. It is structural. The USA is a settler colonial empire whose entire political economy depends on permanent external violence. It is the loss of plausible deniability. The empire is no longer even pretending.
