Sad to report the death of "FGS" - Sir Francis Graham Smith, Astronomer Royal 1982-90, pioneering radio astronomer, and formerly director of the Royal Greenwich Obsy. Herstmonceux, where in 1978 he was very kind to an obnoxious 17-year-old intern. FGS was still an active scientist at age 102 !!

This is pretty clear and obvious to me, but it doesn't seem to register with far-right theocrats.

All pivot on enlightened investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, & Mathematics. "STEAM".

Without them, we descend into the Dark Ages.

Whoa. At about 11 seconds remaining it really looks like the old Viking photo. I used to do a whole talk on the Face on Mars BS.

When I use Google now I just automatically scroll past the AI summaries like they’re banner ads
This is really important. Do NOT use the AI summaries at the top of google searches. Ignore them. This is especially important if you don't have any prior knowledge about the topic, but also a good general rule.

Search sources, scrutinize them carefully and double-check with other sources.
Google’s AI Overviews will not only confirm that a gibberish idiom is a real saying, it will also tell you what it means and how it was derived -- often including reference links.

Congrats to the WI voters and Judge Crawford!

Musk poured a ton of money into this race and flagrantly violated all kinds of laws to do so. So in a very real sense she beat him as well. The fact that you just know her being a woman burns him is just icing.
BREAKING

Cook Political Report’s Dave Wasserman and Decision Desk HQ have projected that Susan Crawford will win the Wisconsin Supreme Court election.

A major victory for Democrats.

Mars is awesome.

BTW the filters used and the color processing of the image make basaltic rock look blue. By eye it would actually be dark gray. But look at those dunes!

A mask ban on top of RFK Jr. spouting anti-vax garbage is a recipe for pandemic. I'm not sure what to do to take pro-active action here — boycotting Columbia may not be realistic — but I will continue to raise awareness in the hope that someone who does know will take notice.
Columbia University agreed to a mask ban to appease Trump.

The school is no longer safe for disabled individuals, not to mention anyone who protests or speaks out on civil rights or Palestine.

Whatever your politics, mask bans should enrage you. They violate our freedom to avoid infection.

This thread is incredible. Poetic and sharp.
About fifty years ago, NASA strapped a message in a bottle to a rocket and flung it into the deep dark
It wasn’t supposed to go this far, but it did. Long past its mission, it’s still out there so far away now that a simple hello takes a day to reach it, and another day to hear if it says hello back
