Querying YA author, Scottish. My best day includes a good book, a cup of Lady Grey, and an empire biscuit. Avi is my great gran. How cool is that? They/m, AI free zone

Also, new folks, please know that when it comes to trolls, jerks, chuds and other undesirables here in the sky, we subscribe to the idea of “Don’t Engage, Just Block.” The block function is superpowered and expunges them entirely from your timeline. They hate it! Block with wild abandon! Don’t wait!

now with even more authors!
In the fall of 2016, a lot of good books came out that you didn’t read because only books about Trump made a dent. This is a list of authors with books that have just come out or are coming out shortly. You can make a difference by ordering or pre-ordering right now.

When people try to pick a fight with me (which has happened a few times) I just block them and go about my day. This culture has added nothing but stress to the world. If you miss it then please consider that it was less like fun and more like abuse for many of the people you were "debating."

The “Bluesky lacks antagonistic tension” argument is pining for Camelot and frankly embarrassing. There was no golden age of social media. We do [gestures vaguely] all this because we have messed up our dopamine receptors with the magic pocket calculator and any impartial observer would pity us

I think a big problem for the arts now is that a lot of tech people believe (or claim to believe) search and algorithms help people find good stuff, but that idea is completely undercut by professional algorithm management jobs. It only works on an "honest" SEO-free Internet.

First reply on my query

The agent is no longer agenting

It was really nice of them to tell me though

Men here is a tip: if you feel like tracking down the work email of your favourite historian to email her and ask her to start pronouncing France incorrectly and to instead say it "like an American" - punch yourself in the dick and balls instead.

Stop putting twitter posts on the TL and do original material instead. Your original material is better than your twitter dunk pls trust. Like even if you don’t have any good riffs rn that is still true. Leave the dead to bury their dead

Can't remember who came up with this, but it remains one of my favourite pieces of advice for writers of fiction:

Write as if your reader is cleverer than you.

Ya ever have a book on your to-read list that you finally got to read after years of people recommending it. Only to be like “why did no one ever mention the weird way the author talks about/treats the young female character?”

Every person I've seen complaining that their feed is not as interesting as their old Twitter feed has been following around 100 people. I think it needs to be 5-10 times that to make it work.

Look at Tom, who is making huge leaps in his socialisation. He snuggles in bed now, and walks all over me, flops over for pats, and he even let me touch his feet! And I'm allowed occasional belly rubs.

He's been in care with me since January, so it hasn't been fast.

It has been my experience that whenever someone criticizes a book for having a "Mary Sue" protagonist that their real beef is the fact that it has a female protagonist written by a female author.

All in all, I would be really hesitant to buy into the peaceful folk think without having looked into the etymology of these terms through a set of very un-romantic specs :)

It is, as @kingdonncha1.bsky.social pointed out, note that in Irish, fairies are (aos) sí / daoine sí(dhe) whereas 'peace' has acquired a suffix and is síocháin in Modern Irish i.e. as the language has evolved, different things happened to both words. Not evidence in itself, but perhaps a clue?

For example here on p 141 www.persee.fr/doc/ecelt_03... This ambiguity continues into modern ScG in that daoine sìth(e) could mean either 'people of a fairy mound' or 'people of peace'.

First off, I've never come across fairies in Gaelic actually being called sìtheil (i.e. peaceful). The problem hinges on the fact that as far back as Old Irish, the word for a fairy mound and peace are the same: síd and people have been arguing for a while if they have the same root or not.

It's a tricky question I don't have an answer for. My gut says it's either a taboo sort of usage (i.e. call them peacful folk, maybe they'll behave accordingly) or wishful translation (there was/is a lot of romanticising going on without looking too closely at the facts, as I'm sure you'll know)

This appears to be am entire account about eels in medieval history

I'm surprised there's this much eels in history

Very cool
Have you ever gotten in a fight w/ a neighbor? Was it about eels?

In 1277, a Wiltshire man named William Durdi charged 3 of his neighbors w/ poaching eels from him. Sadly for William, a jury dismissed the case, finding the men had taken the eels from their own fishing spots.
