This concept is often hard for devs to grasp too, not just players. I put it as "the joy of doing" vs. "the joy of being".

Why does some grind or hard challenge feel joyful in game A, but a chore in game B? You enjoy *existing* in game A. The "thing to do" serves that joy.

It's one thing to understand it. It's another to internalize it.
I've been getting a lot of help with both recently. 😌

(Diagrams by me because diagraming & documenting is a critical part of my internalization process.)
A diagram explaining the way I was conditioned to understand how love worked, due to how I was raised and early relationships. My actual self is a gray circle, captioned, "inherently flawed and fundamentally unlovable." Coming out of the gray circle are yellow circles captioned, "Things I Do; these require constant effort to perform and maintain in order to earn or be worthy of being loved." To the left are three other circles in blue, green, and red, with red lines labeled "love" coming off of them to the external yellow spheres. It is captioned, "The love they feel is for the acts. Thus, love requires constant effort and maintenance to earn." A diagram titles, how it actually works. My Actual Self is now a yellow circle, with the caption, "no more flawed than anyone else, and also fundamentally lovable." Things I do are still present as additional yellow circles, but captioned, "other people in my life may enjoy these with me or take no interest in them at all, depending on the person." Other People remain blue, green, and red circles, but the red love lines go directly to My Actual Self. The captain reads, "The love they feel is for me. Simply me."

Among the more impressive animated works of the last decade — relentlessly introducing some novel idea, interaction, implication and complication to a breathtaking degree. I was utterly compelled from the first scene to the credits.
