I have something niche to talk about!

The first EPR law in the US recently went into force and as one of the companies subjected to it, it was … a surprisingly nice experience and I think more people should know what these laws are about. 🧵

If you want to learn more about mask bans and how the government exploited anti-mask rhetoric and hatred of disabled people to push a eugenics agenda, check out my article from last year.

Also, mask back up. We must normalize them as a public health tool.

We must protect one another:
We Are Witnessing Real Time Eugenics... and People Don't Seem to Care.
Mask bans and revocation of medical exemptions have been all over social media this week - and anti-maskers are reacting with glee. They are celebrating disabled people losing a tool for protection.

For some reason my weather app hasn't been as reliable about including AQI data or warnings about poor AQI, so be sure to download the EPA's AirNow app and turn on notifications.
PSA for those living in most of Canada and in the States east of the Rocky Mountains: plan to minimize your time outside for (at least) the next few days--the air quality forecasts are not looking great due to the wildfires.

This is a really cool project: Indigenous people leading a bird guide project that draws upon their deep knowledge of local ecology, rather than being a sterile document created by outsiders.
How an Indigenous Community in the Amazon Created a Bird Guide of Their Own
Inspired by naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace’s visit nearly two centuries ago, an isolated Indigenous community in Brazil worked with scientists to survey local birds and document cultural...

I have zero compunction talking about the fact that I almost always find or build references. Artists should work smart, not hard, and I think sometimes we're shy to admit that, like it takes away something from our work.

This is incredible. This computer science professor makes his students play a game that simulates the risks and repercussions of getting Long COVID, and then he's like, hey anybody want a mask? And: "approximately 95 to 100% of students who’ve played the game now wear masks in his classroom."
Games can be sense-making tools, allowing players to vicariously experience the risks of contracting COVID-19, recognize #LongCOVID’s most challenging symptoms, and connect with others amid an ongoing public health crisis.

Every aspect of fascism—from racism to transphobia to climate destruction—will kill or disable you.

This is why we need disability justice at the center of our resistance. This is why we need to listen to and follow the lead of disabled folks.

This Autism Acceptance Month, I demand that you accept that sometimes people's needs look different than you might expect and that you are the asshole if you make a big deal out of it
“Stimming had a SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE impact on autistic adults’ self-rated self-efficacy”

“Results CONTRADICT the negative view often expressed suggesting that stimming should be eradicated”

“Stimming has a POSITIVE effect and SUPPORTS autistic individuals’ ability to COPE with difficulties”

Who needs a livable planet when you can simply have the wrong answers to basic questions?
Google and Microsoft recently admitted their emissions are soaring as they build out data centers to power the AI boom.

But analysis from The Guardian suggests the data center emissions of Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple are 662% higher than the companies are reporting.
Data center emissions likely 662% higher than big tech claims. Can it keep up the ruse?

🚨 NEW: Scientists have started to trace deaths back to greenhouse gas emissions, and the results are staggering. Climate change has killed hundreds of thousands of people, a loss of life equivalent to US$ trillions. So far, only ~1 in 8 deaths is being counted.

Reminder to my artist friends that this awesome site exists. It lets you pick a species of animal, set the orientation of the skull, and then search for pictures of that animal that match the skull position.

Also, consider tipping the creator if you found it useful!
