We are Christopher Isherwood, listening on the wireless to warnings that Berliners will die unless they stop the rhetoric about the secret police.

So many questions!
Who is staffing it?
Who is quality assuring that provision?
Who is paying for it?
Where will it physically take place in our cramped and crumbling schools?

No sch takes the decision lightly. Always a last resort.

Auschwitz was at the end of a process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred gradually developed: from ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

In my view, repression at home and thuggery abroad - most recently Greenland - are two sides of the same coin. Both reflect the worldview of people who think violence, power, threat and coercion are all that's required to push your agenda through & secure your interests.

A Reform majority would probably be won with little more than 30% of the vote with most British people opposed to PM Farage but having been unable/unwilling to organise themselves to stop it. It would be a government which has unrestricted power to make radical change yet no mandate to do so.
This is what worries me most at home. The instincts and views of any Reform-Tory govt are so totally at odds with the public, so outlandish to the median voter, as to make government and even the very ability to govern impossible. (1/2)

Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

Dangerous new step in Trump's deranged pursuit of Greenland: economic punishment of allies to coerce Denmark into selling Greenland—on demonstrably spurious grounds. The president is lying: US missile defence can function perfectly w/out US ownership of Greenland. It has done for decades.

Denmark (and Greenland) belong to a nuclear armed mutual defense alliance—which this guy is actively undermining.

Also, the administration’s de facto top lawyer doesn’t understand the law.
Miller: Denmark is a tiny country with a tiny economy and a tiny military. They cannot defend Greenland… Under every understanding of law that has existed about territorial control for 500 years, to control a territory you have to be able to defend a territory…

Do not be surprised if in the first days of an incoming populist radical government there is an entire raft of statutory instruments and other measures prepared and ready to go, exploiting every gap in our constitutional arrangements.
And worryingly, as you highlight, it would be extremely naive for us to assume the well funded right wing “think tanks” haven’t already worked out exactly how to dismantle what protections remain at blitzkrieg speed, should they gain power.

The utterly shameless & widely covered "report" out today, claiming net zero will "cost" £9tn is based on:

* Assuming free fossil-fuel energy, free petrol cars, free gas boilers, free gas power plants etc

AND

* Including climate damages in the "cost" of net zero

I kid you not, it is that stupid
🧵A political/media guide to the "truth" about net-zero

1) Add up costs to install & run a net-zero energy system
2) Pretend fossil-fuelled alternatives wld be free
3) Do say "eco zealots are bankrupting us"
4) Don't say "free cars if we scrap net-zero" cos it sounds ridiculous
5) That's it!
