My quote of the day
(A long one)

Of all the traits which qualify a scientist for citizenship in the republic of science, I would put a sense of responsibility as a scientist at the very top.

This makes me wonder if we might be throwing out some of the baby with the bathwater when we control for respiration artifacts in our brain imaging data.

I did it, I’m a doctor now! It’ll probably take me some time to process everything that has happened. I am so incredibly grateful for my community near and far. And I’m so proud of myself for this accomplishment. I’m exhausted, but so full of love ♥️♥️
Huge congratulations to @glopez.bsky.social on her PhD thesis defense today! A wonderful presentation from a wonderful person, and a much welcome joyful celebration of the science that is possible when we come together to support each other ❤️

Dr. Lopez!!! Well deserved

McCormick and Fetterman were supposed to do a book tour appearance in Pittsburgh, but canceled at the last minute because they heard people would be protesting. We showed up anyway. The book is about mentoring. As mentors, we are concerned. With @ahmarilab.bsky.social and @goldpainlab.bsky.social

If you’ve ever witnessed an undergrad use a serological pipette for the first time or look at a fluorescent cell under a microscope, you know that watching students start to love science in real time is one of the best feelings ever. The attack on NIH is just a Thanos snap for tomorrow’s scientists.

Spent this Valentine’s Day with @vincip.bsky.social standing up for science! I’m very grateful that she puts up with my shenanigans - today this included designing stickers with a QR code to contact reps about the current attacks on scientific research.

Please repost and do something similar at your campus!🧪
Not that it matters much, but ~1200 of these were from CDC. I believe the 5200 figure is actually HHS wide. Could be some at FDA included in this as well.
5200 people. They just received notices apparently.

The illegal cut of NIH indirect costs will mean at least $115M cut to University of Pittsburgh @fetterman.senate.gov @davemccormick.bsky.social. This means huge loss of middle and working class jobs and research trials for breakthrough treatments for residents of Pennsylvania, Ohio, & West Virginia
Helpful table to determine how much your University or health system is set to lose if the NIH indirect cap is suddenly lowered to 15%. For SJSU it is $374k which is on the smaller end but devastating considering our other budget issues. datawrapper.dwcdn.net/l0ZqA/8/
Estimated Single Year Loss of NIH Funding if 15% Indirect Cost Rate is Imposed
Based on analysis of 2024 NIH funding data. Sums are totals of losses in funding to programs if indirect costs had been capped at 15%

Mentors and advisors, a very impactful thing you can do right now is to assure your mentees from all backgrounds that you will continue to support them because their worth is not contingent on any program or funding mechanism 💕
